4.0 out of 5 stars The Second Summer of Love, 31 May 2011
This review is from: Bebop Moptop (Audio CD)
This is a great album with some fantastic Gary Clark songs.

It's just a pity Virgin - or whoever now own the rights - can't be bothered to release a remastered version with all the bonus songs which featured on the various 10"; 12" & CD singles that were released at the time.

The sound quality on the CD is way below par and it appears that they've recorded straight off the original vinyl album. (I kid you not!) You can hear where the album runs off at the end of side one and the needle going onto the record for the start of side 2. Check it out with your headphones on.

Pity really because Gark Clark has never released a duff record in his life. All of his group and solo recordings are worth picking up from Danny Wilson to King L to Transister.

The musical maestro from Dundee.

At this price, buy it every morning, just when you open your eyes. This one and Meet Danny Wilson can make your life so pleasant! Love Gary Clark and he deserves to be remembered as one of the strongest songwriters in the English Music History. Listen to all of it and you'll understand why it's impossible to highlight some tracks; all of them are masterpiece. Love to Gary Clark and his Danny Wilson!

I'm thrilled to be talking about Bebop Moptop, one of those albums that not enough people know about but when you do it shines a light that doesn't dim.

Inevitably falling only just shy of their stellar debut, Bebop Moptop set the seal on Danny Wilson's all-too short career. Two albums and that was that, but what a pair of ground-breaking, intelligent, inventive and wistful pop masterpiecess they are. Loved and not forgotten, Gary Clark of course released one great solo album before becoming a producer of choice in the UK and lately the US. But why no more brilliant music either as Danny Wilson or in the same vein? We'll never know . . . (yep I know about King L, Transister etc, but he's a little hard to get hold of)

They're always being compared to "intelligent" popsters like Steely Dan but Danny Wilson have a pop/baroque/theatrical vibe all their own as well, and a melodic, lyrical quality that's all-too rare. Brilliant songs, great vocals and unusual production means the sound is timeless and still sounds great today.

This is one of a handful of records I've bought several times since it was released and I never tire of listening to it. Sadly the only hit was The Second Summer Of Love, a passable pastiche and nothing like the Danny Wilson sound, which lets the side down a little. But otherwise it's all great. Nice comments by the other reviewers but I haven't noticed anyone comment on the standouts I Was Wrong and Desert Hearts, both of which feature sublime vocals and killer guitar solos.

Like all great records, Bebop Moptop hangs together as a piece from the intro on the first track Imaginary Girl to the fade-out on Shirley McLaine. Give it a listen and you won't be disappointed. Of course you must listen to Meet Danny Wilson but they are a special and compelling pair of albums from a unique band.
