If you are already a fan, you should be pleased with the insightful selection of favorites from some of the core ALbums by di Meola that showcase his unique style and skill with an assortment of other highly acclaimed musical "celebrities" before AL began a series of projects and experimental ALbums that required greater listener sophistication. 4.0 out of 5 stars A mixed collection...flawless guitar work, 7 Dec 2005

This is a collection of Di Meola's CBS-era tracks from 'the mid '70s to mid'-'80s. It is divided in the early semi-serious jazz-rock stuff from the Land of the Midnight Sun-album to the more rock-pop tracks he made in the early '80s with Jan Hammer.
The guitar-playing is perfect and very fast, the compositions are a bit of a mixed bag; there's a clear influence from Chick Corea and the complicated choruses that seemed to come with the territory those days.

While a few favotites may be missed out, you still get a very solid collection of many great works (including quality live versions).
AL had/has blazing guitar skills and seemingly unlimited creativity without loss of musicality. This disc compares well to the works of many latter day guitar gurus that have occupied my listening time of late (Satch, Vai) - they will now gather dust while AL takes over my hi-fi once again. Miles of smiles....great driving disc....

4.0 out of 5 stars Latin Jazz Rock Fusion?, 2 Dec 2009

This is all the Al Di-Meola I possess. Bought it to replace the live CD I lent to someone so long ago I forget who, but who never gave it back. For me, it's probably all I'll need, & I prefer the 70s stuff to the 80s. But this is a VERY talented man well worth checking out if, as with me, you like rock guitarists & want to listen to something a little out of your comfort zone. There's obviously a substantial back catalogue to delve into for anyone for whom this whets the appetite, & this anthology only covers the first eight or nine years of Di Meola's solo career.
The music's often fast, the guitar playing even more often very fast, but always tasteful; you don't get the impression of someone shredding for its own sake. The extra percussion adds to the Latin feel, & there's plenty of room for the other musicians to shine; they don't sound like a bunch of hired hands there to pick up a cheque.
There are fairly substantial sleeve notes, which are helpful to the uninitiated (like me).
As I said, this will probably do me for Al Di Meola, but I'm going back to it a lot, which I guess says something.
