This review is from: Movietone [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Movietone's debut album is a very haunting, atmospheric & hypnotic affair which has some promising ideas but is generally too unfocused to work as a whole.
Kate Wright's vocals are mostly softly spoken (whispered), often vague and indistinct, although she does occasionally lapse into song.
The opener "chance is her opera" is my favourite track which reminded me a little of The Velvet Underground in one of their quieter moments, albeit with female vocals. "Late July" is a nice acoustic piece and "darkness, blue glow" is very stark indeed. Most of the other tracks are spoilt or improved (depending upon your tastes?) by sudden bursts of noise, off kilter sax and general sound effects.
It's more of an interesting listen than one you'd want to come back to regularly but it does have some indefinable quality somewhere within it.
