4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully eclectic, though infuriatingly inconsistent...
As others have mentioned previously, Dead Bees on a Cake was Sylvian’s long-awaited follow up to the near masterpiece Secrets of the Bee Hive, as well as a spiritual and sensual ode to his wife and muse Ingrid Chavez... It is the combination of these disparate factors that accounts for the wavering, dreamlike quality that the songs possess, with Sylvian never...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Cumbersome and Undifferentiated Musical Geology
I really tried to like this CD. But, as usual, Sylvian confounds expectations by, for me, producing the best tracks at the very end.

Released in 1999, `Dead Bees on a Cake' was Sylvian's most `American' set to date. And indeed the opening of the first track, the nine-minute `I Surrender' - a tale of a melancholic epiphany - reminded me of Barry White (yes,...

This is certainly a good album, but a disappointment to those who expected a Secrets of the Beehive part two. In fact, I rate it even less than Gone to Earth or Brilliant Trees. Dead Bees reveals an optimistic Sylvian exploring different musical territories. It's all worth it, but it lacks the spirit of Trees, the mysticism of Earth and the timeless melancholy of Beehive. Those are 4 star albums, this one deserves three.

When the world seems a place of chaos and madness and you feel as if your brain will explode...STOP...
now play this album and enter the world of David Sylvian...a world of beauty and imagination...a world of wonder and mystery...a world away from the reality of everyday life where you can lie back and relax safe in the knowledge that at the end of this magical journey you will be refreshed and ready to face that other world once more...only this time with glorious musical memories to keep you going...the man and his music are quite simply devine...if you don't already own and love this album do yourself a huge favour and buy it now...you will be eternally grateful to have found such a gem and to have met a musical genius...we lose ourselves in inner cities in the hope of re-defining the space that surrounds us ...

brought this CD on seeing a recommendation ...I was writing a review for a Talk Talk CD Laughing Stock (excellent in my opinion)
another reviewer had favourably written of Talk Talk and suggested if you like this try etc. etc. pointing the way to this..
I have to say in my opinion the two CDs do not even warrant comparison ..after a while David's voice grates on my hearing and I long for a gap in the singing ..that's all I can comment on I'm sure there are Sylvian "lovers" who have followed his career since the demise of Japan but it's not for me.My fault I should have had a listen to the CD on you-tube initially and I wouldn't have wasted my money.Oh well one of his fans will pick up a bargain in my local charity shop.
