Not sure what the music fan from London was expecting. Was he just looking for looped drums?
These songs all have breaks, have been sampled like crazy, and are essential additions to your break beat collection. The following tracks have pure drum/percussion breaks:
Dance to the Drummer's Beat
You're Getting a Little Too Smart
Breakdown Pt 2
Papa Was Too
Just a groove in G
Kool Is Back
Most of the other tunes feature drums with perhaps a bass line, or simple instrumental playing overtop - hence they are breaks.
Many of these tracks have appeared on bootleg vinyl compilations like Ultimate Breaks and Beats, or have been a favorite of DJs, producers with samplers and their rap artists. The one song that seems out of place is 'Be Thankful For What You Got', which has had vocal snippets sampled from it, but the beat (drum and light organ section that is the intro to Pt 2) isn't really something that would be part of a DJs vinyl arsenal at a scratch/mix competition.
This set is essential not just for people who are into songs with breaks, but also those who remember the good old days of hip hop sampling and recognize many of these tunes from their sampled beats and hooks.

A good collection, with a lot of material pulled from Ace's own licensing catalogue, buy it if only to own a decent copy of "Dance to the Drummers Beat" - a lost classic. And please can we have "The Champ" by the Mohawks on Vol 3?

In a nut-shell; a collaberation of funk, soul and jazz classics from the late 60's and 70's. but, allas, where are the break-beats?! Discovered in an independant record shop, i got excited by the title and purchased it on the spot. Not what i expected but still worth a listen if you like to boogie.

Superb finds and a great compilation. Would have no trouble recommending this to any one. I'll be checking the other volumes.
