5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Music Masterpiece, 17 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Street Above the Underground (Audio CD)
For me this CD succeeds on several levels. It boasts 11 superbly crafted tunes, each one produced to an exemplary standard. The musicianship throughout is really second to none in the entire world, (what a descovery to me Jean's playing is). The solos are effortlessly soulfull and inspiring. But the real surprise here is that, AT LAST, someone has finally managed to perfectly marry jazz with sounds and beats from TODAY's club culture without making a complete mess of it. There is NO resorting to mindless soloing over drum 'n' bass loops, NO token scratching, NO jazz indulgence spliced up against Garage. All genre's have been equally respected and handled with integrity. The result is truly a new sound and one that is worthy of leading jazz and club culture out of the darkness of minority music scenes and into a bright new chapter. Well done Jean, Miles would be proud of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, 18 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Street Above the Underground (Audio CD)
Fantastic stuff from a well respected and sulfull sax player. But there are plenty of those around, I hear you say. Yes...but the difference is that Jean (and Tony Remy, Producer) have really strived here to push the genre forward. Not only paying attention to what else is happening in music today, particularly the underground club scene, but managing to weave that influence into their already eclectic mix of jazz, afro, funk, world etc and come up with a resulting sound that really gels and is very fresh. This is a superbly crafted album in every respect. Jean and Tony have managed to bring this sound to a highly developed stage already and there will doubtless be many clones and acts jumping on the bandwagon. But they had better be damn quick or they're likely to end up dead in the often still water of contemporary jazz. Jah-Keeeet
