So, Asleep at the Wheel set out in the post-hippie age to revive the sound of Bob Wills. This Western Swing is a melange of country, old-time jazz and some big band influences. The strength of The Wheel is not so much in virtuoso instrumental work, but in the creation of fresh song material, much of which from band member Leroy Preston, with contemporary lyrics for the seventies (Spacebuggy!). That material is presented with the ease and enjoyment that makes Western Swing such a joy. The sound here is very natural and balanced. And above that, this twofer comes at a bargain price. Fully deserving of 5 stars.
