5.0 out of 5 stars EXCEEDS MY EXPECTATIONS, 11 Jun. 2011

This review is from: Ben Hur: The Essential Miklos Rozsa Film Music Collection (Audio CD)
Although this 2-CD set contains largely familiar Rozsa music that most "fans" will already have, don't let this put you off. The performances are superb and
the choral renditions of the Crouch End Singers - recording engineer, Mike Ross-Trevor - make the words clearly distinguishable - the Hosannas and
The Lord's Prayer in King of Kings. Some of the less-familiar material is a
marvellous suite from Providence (6:10), Beau Brummell (6:41), Arabesque (5:22) from Quo Vadis and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (4:52).
I am sometimes put off by renderings of Rozsa's works by other conductors and orchestras that seem to fall short of the dramatic and emotional "feel" of the
originals, but this collection by far exceeds my expectations. The City of Prague Philharmonic who have since presented classic recordings of Rozsa's
El Cid (2 and 3 CD) and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes conducted by Nick Raine who did some orchestrating for Rozsa in the composer's later works, here conducts 5 of the selections and the arrangements and orchestrations are by
Rozsa, Raine and Robbins (Daniel) among others. The playing time of the discs is (52:19) and (51:33) respectively. Some copies are for sale on
the Amazon marketplace at almost give-away prices!

This review is from: Ben Hur: The Essential Miklos Rozsa Film Music Collection (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for the music of the classic film Ben-Hur, but it also contains many other film tracks by the composer Miklos Rozsa. It's performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra with conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine. It's a two disc set. The "Ben-Hur Suite" is on disc 1 and in my opinion is the main highlight. The strings of the City Of Prague PO have a beautiful glowing sound throughout this double CD and are used to powerful effect in the opening prelude of the "Ben-Hur Suite" and especially the Love Theme, while the Parade of the Charioteers is very much brass driven. Another highlight on disc 1 is "Spellbound" which won Miklos Rozsa an Academy Award and again is well played by the strings, which really drive the piece.

Disc 2 has the same sweeping powerful style of Rozsa and the notable highlights are "The Thief Of Bagdad Suite" (listen to those strings in the "Love of a Princess"), King Of Kings (excellent chorus in "The Lord's Prayer") and the wonderful "The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad".
