UFO never seem to disappoint, despite the length of time they've been around, this album shows that they are far from finished. Continuing their brand of hard rock this album features some excellent tracks. "Unravelled" is a great riff-heavy melodic rock track. Schenkers guitars are supreme throughout and the whole band really shine on numbers like "Rise Again" and "Serenade". Moggs vocals are truly impressive and although Covenant isn't as fast and heavy as the excellent "Walk On Water" - Their previous album, It shows a maturing Rock n' Roll band who still have the passion and attitude for some quality rock musicianship.

I must have been living on another planet since I was unaware that Schenker had rejoinded UFO for 3 albums around 2000. I had dropped out of UFO pretty much as he left the band many years ago. Well this album - Covenant - and also Walk on Water are absolutely brilliant. The third one with Schenker (Sharks) is definitely poorer (maybe correlated with why Schenker look like such a dejected hobo on the pictures, he is not inspired on Sharks !!).

Any fan of good heavy metal with shining incisive melodious guitar soli must have Walk on Water and Covenant. Brilliant.

This is definitely UFO. However, with key classic lineup members on board the album (maybe) should have been bigger. At least it's something I expected from them. It's good, no doubt about that, everything clicks and Michael Schenker is all over the place but the album lacks that grandeur of its predecessor - Walk on Water as well as some other UFO albums. Couple of songs like Midnight Train, Unraveled, Love is Forever deliver instantly but some others you might want to skip after a while.

Besides, the second CD, which is a live recording is a bit out of place. It has some of UFO's greatest songs on it and two numbers from Walk on Water, however, the band doesn't add too much to the classic songs which is a shame. Plus, there are strange echos and even more bizarre keybords on the recording. There are better UFO live recordings out there.

Having been a UFO fan since the 70's I was really impressed with the quality of this album. This album offers classic UFO rock with the standout being "Midnight Train" which is an exceptional heavy grinding track. My other two favourites are "Miss the lights" and "Serenade" which shows Michael Schenker in a melodic mood. Schenker's guitar work is exceptional and I just can't stop playing the album. The added bonus with this purchase is the addition of a Live in USA disc. Very good quality recording with classic UFO tracks and two from the Walk on Water disc. How good is that "Venus" track, one of my absolute favourites. Do yourself a favour all you UFO fans and purchase this disc and you definitely won't be disappointed.

Many expectations were created after the 1995 release of the excellent "classic line-up reunion" album, Walk On Water.
A bit of a let down. Nevertheless, Covenant proves that UFO can still deliver some of the best pure hard rock around these days. In addition, UFO still has that trademark 'elegant' sound. OK, this is definitively not "Lights Out", and don't expect another "Obsession", etc. This is a progression of the band's music into the year 2000. Listen to it, the music on this album will grow on you, just as the best music normally does. Paul Raymond does not play here, and his absence is noticeable. I admire the technical prowess of Ainsley Dunbar's drumming, but his style doesnt quite fit here, it sounds a bit much predictable and soul-less. Drummer Andy Parker is also missing here, or maybe Simon Wright.
The live CD is quite good, but I'd rather listen to a different song list. UFO has an incredibly great musical repertoire, so why waste it? UFO shouldn't stick with the same live songs over and over.

For some reason U.F.O without mad guitarist Michael Schenker are like a roast dinner without the meat! Well Schenker`s guitar work is all over this fine c.d. The songs sound distant at first but soon greet you like old friends & keep your interest `till the last notes fade away. The new songs are hardly ground braking but U.F.O have a certain timeless charm. If the new stuff `ain`t enough for you then there is a bonus disc (which is why it`s listed here as a box set) of live classics from the U.S leg of the tour. 'Love to love' sounds as good as ever yet for some reason they`ve omitted to enclude the classic 'Rock Bottom'. Still, all in all it`s a good buy for the 'Classic English Rock' fan. Not quite as instant as their last offering but far more enduringly playable.

This album seems to have created quite a split amongst the reviewers in USA who either love it or hate it. I suppose it depends on what you are comparing it with and as a fan of their music I would prefer to give them credit for trying to do something original. Taken in context with their other albums this is not one of their best, but on the whole Covenant has some pretty good stuff on it. You also get a cracking 7 song live set as a bonus so I don't see what the yanks are complaining about !
As is always the case with UFO albums it opens well with "Love is Forever" and reaches a high with "Unravelled", a typical Mogg/Way rocker with a catchy basic structure. Next is "Miss the Lights" where lyrically Mogg excels and the style is more commercial. From here on in it slowly goes down hill. "Midnight Train" starts really promising, winding up to a bizarre change of tempo in the middle eight which spoils it completely. "In the Middle of Madness" is fairly light and would be ideal as a single release. "Fools Gold" is also OK, a typical start slow, build and change number that is their trademark style. "Smell of Money" has a raunchy vocal, "Rise Again" is OK then it gradually fades to "Cowboy Joe" and "The World and His Dog" which are a bit lightweight and eminently forgettable. "Serenade" is a very different style and you'll be tempted to get out the maracas!
Being critical you would have to say who ever employed the backing vocalists wants shooting. There are lots of tempo changes which make the songs a little disjointed and generally the drumming is very flat and uninspiring. The fact that the album features Mogg, Schenker and Way gets it 3 stars and with a great live set thrown in that lifts it to 4 and a half.
