4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to use

A very impressive suite of programs once you get it working. I had lots of problems because my new PC had an unsuitable video card. The 60 day support is very good they usually answer e-mails within 24 hours. I eventually installed the software on my old PC and it was very smooth. It took a long time to put on the 2,100+ packages it needed to run games, multi-media...

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to use, 29 July 2000

This review is from: SuSE Linux 6.4 (CD Edition) (CD-ROM)
I always approach Linux installations with some trepidation having had numerous bad experiences in the past, but with release 6.4 of their popular package, SuSE have produced a comprehensive and (more importantly) easy to install package that delivers the goodies.
The package contains six CDs and a manual so big it puts War and Peace to shame together with a very impressive quickstart guide for those who want to dive right in and get cracking.
One of the more impressive additions in this release in the Yast 2, a graphical installation routine that really smooths installation for those uncomfortable with the text-based version 1.
From powering my machine on to achieving a bootable linux core with full X support and oodles of extras took around 30 minutes and minor niggles relating to graphics and network cards were soon sorted out thanks to the excellent 517 page manual which is a great improvement over previous releases.
SuSE ships with the a variety of window managers including Gnome and KDE (which is set up as default) and apps including Gimp and the dowload edition of WordPerfect 8 are provided within the disk pack together with more than 1500 utilities, games and more.
All-in-all, SuSE 6.4 represents excellent value for money and the new graphical install routine it's one of the easier installations to deal with.

The manual is a bit technical if you are a novice or "newbie" as you are called in LinuxLand, but the install booklet is very easy to follow.
Linux is not for newcomers to computing. I regret not ordering the DVD version - 6 CDs full of programs is a bit much !
This is not a trouble free package but is worth the effort of getting it going. It is very powerful, there is loads of free stuff on the internet for Linux and everyone who uses Linux seems to be very keen to help you if you get stuck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 2 Aug. 2000
This review is from: SuSE Linux 6.4 (CD Edition) (CD-ROM)
A brilliant distro that is easy to install, supports a massive amount of harware, is easy to configure, comes with a massive amount of really useful apps and packages and is just as powerful as the rest of the distros.
it's definitly worth considering if you are thinking about moving onto linux. it took me 2 other distros before i found this excellent one.
great for both the newbie and the experienced users!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best distribution, IMO, 20 Aug. 2000

This review is from: SuSE Linux 6.4 (CD Edition) (CD-ROM)
Having used loads of distributions, SuSE has long been my favourite. Coming on 6 CDs gives a lot of scope for software - you'll never need to download and build anything! The startup scripts work very well, unlike redhat, and its very easy to configure. I've used Unix for 12 years or so, and linux since kernel 0.97 (IIRC) this is the best, and I can't wait for version 7.0 definitely the best
