4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality space shooter
Bruce Cambell, what a star! The man behind the legendary Ash from the Evil Dead and that bloke with the dodgy beard in Zena, Warrior Princess lends his wry vocal talents to this Microsoft space shooter that looks and plays wonderfully well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun at the Fringe
At first glance this game can look daunting and overly complex but thanks to its excellent training missions which are unusually fun and a fairly intuitive control set up it isn`t long before you`re out there doing doing you`re stuff as Jake Logan. Graphically the game is good but not as spectacular as Microsofts Starlancer. Nor is it as realistic or the fight...

The plot to Tachyon: The Fringe (TTF) is a twisting tale of betrayal, cameraderie and good vs evil (the good and evil bits are interchangabel depending on which career path you take).
The scale of the graphics is awesome as the player takes on opposition ship ranging from single-person fighters to massive capital ships that seem to take an eternity to fly over. The in-game shooting action is fast paced and includes some interesting features including a slide which allows your ship to rotate through 360 degrees whilst travelling in a set direction.
There's plenty here to keep the ardent starship fan happy for hours but there's one big bugbear and that's the necessity to travel through the tachyon gates every time you want to reach a particular battle or perform a set mission. There's an irritating cut-scene which can't be bypassed and plenty of dead air time as you move from one gate to another which gets in the way and detracts from an otherwise enjoyable and engrossable game. If you can stand the interruptions however, this is a great way to wasteseveral hours at a stretch.

Graphically the game is good but not as spectacular as Microsofts Starlancer. Nor is it as realistic or the fight sequences as fierce. A lot of the visual and audio effects seem a bit weak in comparison. However, it is great fun to play with some good original ideas such as the slide move and the jumping through gates as well as the Galactic map showing your progress through the game. Bruce (Evil Dead) Campbell provides the voice of your character (Jake Logan) with some great one delivered as only he can. This is a great and highly enjoyable game that can only be highly commended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly engaging game play., 18 July 2000

I have been a fan of space combat simulations since Elite on the C64. This game comes very high on my list of favourites. It is one of those games where you find yourself saying "I'll just do one more mission before I go to bed....2 hrs later you are still there". Excellent graphics with a decent card, coupled with solid story and amusing one liners. Go get now and immerse yourself in the world of Jake Logan.
You are a hired pilot, framed for murder and banished to the Fringe. Join the Bora people or the Gal Span, a huge corporation bent on owning most of the universe. Build your ship up bit by bit until you can take on anyone.
