4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 7 Aug 2000
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 6.0 (CD-ROM)
If there's one fault I can pick with this package it's that it's too comprehensive.
Covering Visual C++, Visual J++ (until MS phase it out), FoxPro, Visual Basic, InterDev, SourceSafe and more this is the all-in-one package that the every Windows developer should own.
InterDev draws the whole complicated affair together and the learning curve is quite steep, but oncve you mastered the basics the level of integration is stunning.
All of the pieces fit together beautifully well and the degree of control handed to the user for code creation in the visual environment, debugging and maintenance is far better than anything I've used in the past.
The inclusion of tools such as Visual SourceSafe allow multiple users to work on the same codebase without trampling all over one another's work - which is nice ...
All-in-all a top flight pacakge, I suspect for many, many people it may be seriously over-the-top but for the serious developer this can't be beaten.
Shame there's no proper paper documentation though ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Brilliant! And getting rarer, 16 July 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 6.0 (CD-ROM)
This is the last version of the easy to use windows programming suite from Microsoft. After this, you are onto .NET, the system that takes over your PC. Unless you are a professional who has to be up to date, Studio 6 is the one for you. Easy to learn, easy to use. And Enterprise is the cream of the crop. The programming languages are all powerful, but remain simple to use, contrast with .NET, where the languages are more or less clones of one another. This is the last version with the type of visual basic corresponding to what we see in the Office macros. Visual Basic 6 is simply the best "home programmer's" language, without the extra complication of .NET. Coupled with this you have Visual C++, to enable you to get closer to the operating system. With full integration with databases, this is still a superb suite. Get it while you still can.

Addendum. I have just found out that of the Visual Studio 6 package, only Visual Basic 6 will be supported by Windows Vista, the rest is being superseded by .net. VB6 is very different to VB.net. It really is the last Home Progammer's language.
