Ever heard of the Seven Deadly Sins? Lust? Gluttony? Sloth? Well I know from a tremendous wealth of experience that greed is the most fun out of all the deadly sins on offer. That experience comes from playing the 1994 Game Boy game Wario Land, the third game in the Super Mario Land Game Boy series. You play as the little-bit-demented Wario, the main villain from Super Mario Land 2.

Wario has stumbled across the slightly-funny named Kitchen Island. He them comes up with a smart idea to smash his way through 40 levels based on foods and kitchen appliances, stealing as many coins as he possibly can. That's right. No princesses in this game. It's all about the money. He's a nasty piece of work that Wario. So much so that you do feel a little sympathetic towards the "enemies" that he beats up along the way.

Each level requires you to get from start to finish, jump on platforms and over a few pits, just like Mario. But that's about as identical as Mario and Wario get. Wario's preferred method of attack is the shoulder barge, which he can use to send all those crabs and pirate ducks flying, and then pick up their left behind coins. Wario's power-ups come in form of hats. The Viking hat helps Wario bash blocks quicker as well as making him look Danish; the Jet hat helps him fly through the air like Superman after letting himself go; and the Dragon hat spits fire to help him overcome obstacles.

There's a few ideas here that provide Wario Land with a bit of depth and make it an enjoyable Game Boy game. Some of the levels have more than one exit. If you can find the hidden 2nd exits you'll unlock hidden levels to explore, giving you a chance to shoulder barge more enemies out of your way as well as pick up extra coins. There are two bonus levels you can play at the end of each level; one giving you the chance to earn extra coins, the other extra lives.

Some of the levels also contain hidden treasures. These are hidden away in secret rooms, and the only way to access them is to find keys to unlock the doors. Trying to find the treasures adds longevity to the game, and it's pretty satisfying when you do find one. But if that's not enough for you then maybe the game's ending will motivate you further. There are six different endings to WL, and which one you get depends on how many coins and how many treasures you've found. The mild desire to see the best ending will motivate you to pick up every single last coin Wario can get his grubby hands on, and you'll be having plenty of fun along the way.

Wario Land is a brilliant game. It has a lot of fun level designs; it's fairly challenging in places; and the coin collecting and treasure hunting will keep you occupied for quite some time. This is the best game in the Super Mario Land GB series. One piece of advice before I go: Be sure to have at least 10 coins on you when you get to a level's exit...and you thought parking meters were annoying!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best platformer ever..., 10 July 2004
This review is from: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Game Boy) (Video Game)
Warioland, is one of the most amazing games i have ever played, forgeting about 2,3 and 4 (which i found rather disapointing after playing the original) it has almost completely different gameplay, and is much more similar to a mario game. For example, Warios powerups are provided by wearing certain sorts of hats, and of course, he can become small when hit by an enemy. Anyway, the point is, if you liked the over wario games you will LOVE this. enjoi ;)
