Wow! This is a must see movie,

This review is from: Truman Show [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This is a very powerful movie. I have never been a big fan of Jim Carrey, but in this movie he is great and plays the character with much sensitivity apart from humor. Apparently the movie was never a big success in the US, which could be because the subject is too close for comfort. It brings to mind the story by Gurdjieff of the evil magician, as the movie shows how Truman is really not in control of anything, as it is all orchestrated from above. Just like we like to think we are at the top of the food chain and in control of our lives, so too does Truman believe that he makes real choices and that he is free. Little does he know that he is lives in a "cage". To keep Truman from discovering the Truth, the "media" is employed to constantly shape his opinions and to suppress any questioning of the reality in which he lives. This has scary parallels to todays world, where the mainstream media and manufactured opinion polls acts like the ancient Greek chorus in shaping public opinion the way the controllers wish it to be. So definitely a top movie, that won't disappoint. It is a wake-up call to question one's own reality and to whether one is just a machine playing out a script written by someone else.

Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura) stars as Truman Burbank, a simple man who is being filmed 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, only Truman doesn't know. For years Carrey had been lighting up screens with his wonderful comic talent in The Mask, Ace Ventura and Batman Forever. This Peter Weir comedy drama was the first role Carrey was able to give a more serious and dramatic role which earned him his first Golden Globe, showing the viewing public he could perform at a serious level, rather than constant slapstick. His sentimental portrayal of a man who wants a bit more out of life is excellent, dramatic and also a sign of hope for the watching audience of the Truman show, which was vital. Though I love Carrey's humour in previous films, I personally felt it was necessary to see a different side to him, and he pulls it off so well. The character Truman is a real joy to watch, a symbol of hope and joy for the viewing public. Having a lot to deal with, such as a stressful job and a complicated life with the loss of a loved one puts viewers at ease as it embodies what other people go through, to watch someone else go through it with a positive energy justifies the viewing audience. Having a goal also is inspiring and a great human characteristic. The plot is consistent with an excellent setting and idea behind it. We see typical objects and ideas associated with the reality TV genre, such as acting, props and of course the main setting for the show, which is the whole world Truman lives in, a real landmark for the reality genre and is executed brilliantly with a real sophisticated approach to it, where everyone is in certain place at certain times, which all revolve around the central protagonist, which makes the film slightly humorous to. Great support is given from Oscar nominated Ed Harris who plays the creator of the show. Laura Linney (Love actually) also performs well as Truman's wife. And with such a joyous and determined central protagonist, the Truman show will keep you hooked right to the inspiring and heart-warming final.

One of my favourite films ever. Don't worry if youre not a Jim Carey fan. This is Carey as you've never seen him before. Funny and moving at the same time , he displays his superb acting talents to their best in this film. I had no idea what this film was all about when I first watched it....it blew me away. Supporting cast Laura Linney and Ed Harris are both sensational too. Highly recommended.

Perhaps my very favourite film. Carrey is hilarious in films like The Mask but here he proves he is a superb actor without needing to pull a million funny faces. His performance does sometimes has a slightly manic edge to it which is entirely appropriate - though late in the film when his boat reaches the wall the atmosphere Carrey (with the help of Philip Glass) creates is truly poignant and powerful. Carrey is ably supported by a good cast - Linney's portrayal of Meryl (especially when advertising!) is excellent, and Ed Harris is superb as Christof. The film is an amusing and thought-provoking look at the consequences of reality television in its most extreme sense and is pulled off with complete conviction (and will leave you slightly paranoid for days). Whether you're a Carrey fan or not, this film comes highly recommended.

Bitingly Brilliant,

Jim Carrey is Truman Burbank! the most famous person in the world, whose life is just a non-stop, live soap, though off course he doesn't know it until he realises strange things begin to happen to him and the fact that the same things seem to go on like one big cycle in one of the most thoughtful, bizarrely amusing and genuinely touching satires for a very long as it leaves you pondering on that "what if" philosophy. With brisk direction from "witness" man, Peter Weir and a wonderfully dis-arming score by Berkhard Dalwitz to bring heart to an originally cruel movie.

The Truman Show is good. No other way of discribing it. We watch in on Truman just like everyone else in the world it seems as, unknowing to him, his whole life is a TV show. As he becomes suspicious we ride along with him as he unfolds gradually the truth. Weir has created a fresh and engaging script which taps into the notion of middle america's paranoia. Nicely shot in 'scew-if' angles "The Truman Show" is undoubtedly Carrey's finest work to date.
