5.0 out of 5 stars music with dirt under its finger nails, 14 Oct 2006

This review is from: The Voice Of The People: A Selection From The Series Of Anthologies (Audio CD)
A sampler from Topic's series of the same name, at the price this is a really superb collection of music and (mostly) song from the authentic oral tradition. Not all the performances are great, though some are from musical giants like Jean Robertson and Joe Heaney; all are, at the least, of great historical interest. Editor Reg Hall is to be commended for avoiding the old academic preconceptions and trying to reflect the full range of styles within the genre.

Personally I would have preferred more dance music, but the balance reflects that of the full series. If you never listen to any of those, with this CD in your collection you will have some idea of what real Bristish traditional music was about.
