5.0 out of 5 stars Waking Ned
I have seldom been so entertained by such a distinct lack of action in all my life. The film just goes to prove that it is crafty dialogue, a well worked plot and excellent acting that goes to make a wonderful film and not spectacular special effects or wall to wall fight scenes.
The main plot of the winning lottery ticket is superbly crafted by Ian Bannen and David...

I have seldom been so entertained by such a distinct lack of action in all my life. The film just goes to prove that it is crafty dialogue, a well worked plot and excellent acting that goes to make a wonderful film and not spectacular special effects or wall to wall fight scenes.
The main plot of the winning lottery ticket is superbly crafted by Ian Bannen and David Kelly (who doesn't look a moment different from when he played incompetent builder O'Reilly in Faulty Towers!) and these two wily old dogs concoct their plan to defraud the Irish Lottery, involving the whole village in their madcap scheme.
The sub-plot of the triangular love affair involving pig farmer James Nesbit (for whom greater things awaited after this film) is just sublime in its gentle loveliness and is almost worthy of a film in its own right. Beautifully coupled with the questions over the boy Maurice's parentage and then this itself attached to the young boy's relationship with the village's priest, it is really well executed.
The other supporting characters are fantastic in their own quirkiness
In a way it's a throwback to more innocent times when everyone knew their neighbours and never travelled further than their birthplace.
The humour is not laugh out loud, but the humorous parts are genuinely funny and in many respects more enjoyable for their gentle wit. Mix that with some indisputable touching scenes and the mix really is a winner. Admittedly it does play the "ideal Irish" card pretty heavily and makes out Ireland to be everything us outsiders dream it is, but that said the scenery is stunning (albeit Isle of Mann scenery) and the music fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, honest, feelgood comedy, 9 Oct 2003
This review is from: Waking Ned [1999] [DVD] (DVD)
One of the funniest films I have ever seen. Not necessarily roll-around-on-the-floor funny or zany Jim Carrey funny but full of clever comedy from start to finish. Subtlety and laugh-out-loud funniness combine seamlessly. Some people have taken issue with the film's purported condonement of fraud, but decide that for yourself.
The stunning scenery (filmed entirely on the Isle of Man) and eminently well-matched musical soundtrack (the monumental climax at the end of the film is simply stunning) complement fabulous performances from the cast and create a wonderful film to be enjoyed time and time again

5.0 out of 5 stars Jackie and Michael try to cash in a winning lottery ticket, 30 Mar 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Waking Ned (VHS) (1998) (VHS Tape)
A charming comedy about a pair of lifelong friends, Jackie O'Shea (Ian Bannen) and Michael O'Sullivan (David Kelly), who are presented with the opportunity of a lifetime when they discover Ned Devine has died, clutching the winning ticket frm the Irish lottery in his hand. This means enlisting everybody in town to join the grand conspiracy and to share in the pot of gold. Meanwhile, in what we think is an unrelated subplot, Pig Finn (James Nesbitt) is trying to convince Maggie (Susan Lynch) to marry him and to learn if her son is his own. "Waking Ned Devine" ends up being more about friendship than greed, with the high point coming when Jackie eulogizes his friend Michael when they bury old Ned under Michael's name to fool the Lottery Official. Yes, there is a bit of fantasy here since the Lottery Office could not be so easily fooled, but what is wrong with a harmless suspension of disbelief? Filmed in beautiful locations on the Isle of Man, "Waking Ned Devine" is a gentle reminder than you can have a nice little film with good actors and a fine script that does not cost a whole lot of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable, 4 Dec 2000
By A Customer

Words can not describe this film. It is just brillant. Waking Ned serves up generous helpings of greed, laughter, and deceit.
Delicate chuckles abound in this tale of two wrinklies trying to defraud the Lottery.
It's a joy to watch, as long-time friends try to track down their town's winning ticket-holder with gifts of crisps, scented soap, cakes, and even a mammoth chicken dinner.
You will watch this movie over and over again, and find it funnier each time

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, but so funny, 14 Oct 2010
This review is from: Waking Ned [1999] [DVD] (DVD)
Filmed in my home 'country', the Isle of Man, this is a classic British comedy with a simple but enthralling storyline which at times had the whole family in stitches. My 14 year old son was even amazed at how good it was which says something! Keeps you glued to the screen from start to finish. Recommended as a 'must watch'.

Waking Ned, what a film. If you feel you need a feel good film this is the one for all ages especially those that would love to win the Lottery. Waking Ned is story of a couple of good old friends living in a villiage in Southern Ireland that discover that Lottery has been won by someone local and they try to befriend the winner if they can find out who it is. They discover that it is poor old Ned Devine and that he has sadly passed away with the shock of the win. The characters and the music and the scenery is wonderfull, it was recorded in The Isle Of Man. Waking Ned [1999] [DVD]They hach a plan to share the winning among the rest of the villiagers. The lies and crack is just wonderful. I bought this for my husband and if you could wear out a DVD it would be worn out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good old Ned, 16 April 2010
This review is from: Waking Ned [1999] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a dark comedy but it is very unusual in that it manages to stay very upbeat and positive at the same time. The locations stop this film from becoming gloomy. The humour is brilliant but it is also very emotive. It demonstrates how greed can give way to generosity and it really uplifts you towards the end.

Doesn't everyone want to live in a small town like the one in this movie and rally around a cause? This movie is funny and has great acting.
