5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Selection, 25 Nov 2010

This review is from: The Essential Chris Barber (Audio CD)
As students of New Orleans type jazz the Chris Barber Jazz Band did not merely copy or imitate - they interpreted and they produced their own style. This has continued to develop for over 50 years, but for me the 21 tracks of this CD are from the best period early after the band's formation. There is a superb selection of upbeat, slow tempo, blues etc. and all evoke nostalgic feelings for the revivalist period of traditional jazz. This is particularly so for 5 numbers featuring superbly rich vocalist Ottilie Patterson - `Beale Street Blues', `I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate', `Jailhouse Blues', `Make Me A Pallet' and my favourite `Trouble In Mind'. Also there are 4 numbers featuring Monty Sunshine on clarinet - `Petite Fleur', `Bill Bailey', `Wild Cat Blues' and my favourite `When You And I Were Young Maggie'. Chris Barber presents a moving solo trombone - `Sweet Georgia Brown' and the rest are magnificent examples of the Barber band at its best, of which my favourites include `Bourbon Street Parade', `Tishomingo Blues', `New Blues', `High Society', `Savoy Blues' and `Panama Rag' - but it is hardly possible to select favourites. All are superb - all are essential in the history of Britain's most popular and everlasting jazz band. Aficionados will recognize how much of this CD became regular components of the Barber band repertoire and be aware of varying treatments over the years. Those new to Chris Barber are likely to thrill for more, but if they only want one CD this is essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music and still going, 17 July 2009

The music is emotive of my youth and still sounds as fresh as ever. Ottilie Patterson's voice has all the power I remember and the combination of a great jazz band and a fabulous singer is just music to the ears. Chris Barber now in his 80's still travels with his band performing all over the country. That the band's repertoire is wide is exemplified by comparing Bourbon Street Parade, a very traditional rendition, to New Blues, a very different sound. Great if you like jazz, if you've never heard Chris and Ottilie then give it a go.

Purchase and delivery excellent. The Tracks on the disc appear to be mainly live concert recordings, so not top quality. In particular they don't do justice to Ottillie's vocals.
