If you are a fan of Slapp Happy or of the individual work of it's members, Peter Blegvade, Anthony Moore and in particular the beguiling Dagmar Krause, then you should check out this album. Camera was an extraordinary opera especially created for television back in the mid 1990's. Broadcast only once on the UK's Channel 4 it's a disgrace that this magical work has for years been left to languish. This new soundtrack album shows off the powerful and moving voice of Dagmar Krause in an unexpected musical setting. As usual one can only marvel at how such strength, range and depth of feeling can emanate from her apparently delicate frame. Peter Blegvad's libretto for Camera is sly, witty, poetic and humorous in almost equal measure and acts as a counterpoint to Moore's dynamic, orchestral almost cinematic score. This is a remarkable album and one that deserves to be heard not only by the loyal following of fans but also by a wider audience. It's a pity that we cannot also enjoy a release of these tracks along with the fantastic imagery of the original television work on DVD, if only to replace our worn out VHS copies of the only tv airing! Never the less this CD and is highly recommended.
