This album of piano/cello duets, some fairly brief, has a rich melodic warmth and commitment, and nothing to shatter the calm, almost soporific quality of the overall mood. Both Bjornstad and Darling adopt a tranquil, meditative approach, which is perfect for de-stressing, or to prepare for sleep. Although a handful of the pieces have Renaissance origins (Byrd, Dufay, Gibbons et al), their re-working means they slot seamlessly into the duo's own compositions. Impeccable musicianship and the usual high standard of production from ECM. However, if you're looking for more variety but wish to retain Bjornstad's honeyed melodies, I suggest you investigate his trio album 'Floating', either of his wonderful 'Sea' albums featuring some keening guitar from Rypdal, or even the sampler-rich 'Before the Light', with some astonishing guitar from Aarset. What a talented man!

If you've had a completely awful day, where nothing goes right, come home, slip this CD into the player, and allow Bjornstad and Darling to take care of your emotions. Both sad and joyful, this is music for healing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite Epigraphs, 2 Mar 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Epigraphs (Audio CD)
I bought this CD on the basis of a 30 second snippet from The Lake. This is the best track for me but the whole CD has wonderful music on it. I have a huge collection of CD's; all too many of them, especially the latter ones, feel like they have been recorded for a cash reward. Not so with Epigraphs. Bjornstad and Darling let you feel that they love and enjoy their music. As it is exceptionally well crafted they deserve to be proud of this recording.

I was very fortunate to receive this as Christmas present from my dear old Mum, shortly after it's original release ten-twelve years ago - thank you Mum. Even after all this time I still marvel at the pairing of Darling and Bjornstaad.

My wife and I were lucky enough to spend part of the day driving up the coast from Brisie, to Margate, Redcliffe and Scarborough, during which my Walkman randomly selected this record. It was the perfect soundtrack for a drive in the sub-tropical heat with Bjornstaad's playing matching the brooding weather conditions.

Really nice chamber music. Recommended.

Bought this CD after "The Lake" excerpt> Was hoping for a key change and it did arrive. To me this was not a great album but I adore some of its parts, particularly "Gothic" and "The Lake". Something very pure about it, I love the two tracks.
