5.0 out of 5 stars Korngold's Finest., 10 Jun 2003

I have no hesitation in naming this score as Korngold's finest – and I have yet to hear a better recording of Korngold's film music. I thought that the recent Previn recording on DG might challenge it, but no. This Varese recording presents an inspired performance, with sound quality to match.
This recording is, of course, more complete than Previn's. The latter's disc also makes room for highlights of three other Tudor-age Korngold scores. As a compilation of extracts from this genre of movie, Previn offers an excellent overview and his disc is worthy of 5 stars also. But as a representation of the Sea Hawk score alone, Kojian's Varese effort is way on its own and remains an indispensible disc for any admirer of Korngold and film music. Superb in every way.

The Naxos recording of Korngold's music for the film "The Sea Hawk" is the most complete ever - 114 minutes spread over a disc and a half. The second CD is completed by the music for "Deception" which includes the Cello Concerto.

The playing of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Stromberg is superb. The music flows along in a glorious stream, symphonic style, without the endless stops and starts that are typical of film soundtrack albums.

I feel that this is one of the finest film scores ever and would place it above Korngold's "Robin Hood" score.

The CDs come with an excellent booklet crammed with facts about both films and their music - and the sound quality is very good indeed. It's a wonderful set and I could not recommend it more highly.
