This compilation album from 1983 makes an excellent introduction to the music of Jean Michel Jarre, indeed it was the first JMJ album I bought back in 1988 and it got me hooked on his music ever since. It covers Jarre's first four albums: Oxygene (1976), Equinoxe (1978), Magnetic Fields (1981) and The Concerts In China (1982) and includes all his most famous tracks from this period, the only notable omissions perhaps being 'Equinoxe 7' and 'Souvenir of China'. It also features lesser known pieces such as 'The Overture' (a slower, reworked version of the first part of 'Magnetic Fields 1'), 'Fishing Junks at Sunset' and the second part of 'Magnetic Fields 1'. The only downside to this album is that half of the tracks have been edited down so that they are shorter than the full length originals, and for that reason the German version of this album: Musik Aus Zeit Und Raum (1983) is better as it has fewer edited tracks and a much longer running time, but if you are just looking for a good introduction to Jarre's music or want a 'best of the early years' album then either version will do.

If however you want a more up-to-date compilation that samples a wider range of his music then go for Images: the Best of Jean Michel Jarre (1991) or the later 2004 release Essential Jean-Michel Jarre.

smashing compilation, as per the other reviews

additionally, the remastering of this compilation is top notch, compares very well with the latest best digital remasterings in the 2000s, which is surprising given the Essential is dated about 1983, so the sound quality is of an unusually high standard considering the date of issue.

Up to now, I only had this on an old vinyl LP and therefore wanted it on audio CD as well. In my opinion, Jean-Michel Jarre is (and always has been) one of my favourate music creators of electronic synthesised music other than Vangellis so this is a real bonus especially as I don't think it is being sold new in the high street shops any more - so to speak!
