One of the most thrilling pieces of music of all time. Great to see the Previn recording available on CD (my old vinyl was getting a bit worn). I miss the Trafalgar Square lions, though: they were featured on the old disc's cover, but are not on the CD. The lions make me and many people think of wartime, and national crises - and the Walton s. 1 seems to be about those dark, late-1930s anxieties. I once heard a disc of it recorded by a venerable, knighted British conductor - once, not again, from now on it's Mr Preview for me.

This is a classic performance that the critics raved about when it was initially released in the early seventies. I have had it on vinyl since it first came out but decided that it was high time I bought a CD version. Needless to say, it was available on Amazon! I would highly recommend it, particularly to enthusiasts for Walton's music.

Walton is off the beaten track but well worth taking some time to discover, hold on tight though it's an adventure!
