5.0 out of 5 stars A great album, but not their last, 20 Nov 2005

Xmal Deutschland were one of the best live acts to come out of the 4AD label. I had the great fortune to see them when they were touring after this album, and the live atmosphere they conjured up was electric.

'Tocsin' continued on from their excellent debut 'Fetisch', and the excellent 'Sequenz' EP, with the band growing into their sound and expanding their horizons beyond the raw, angry feel of the first album. 'Tocsin' has a more self-assured, more tightly constructed range of songs, much more in keeping with the other bands on the label.

Although 'Tocsin' was the last album Xmal made with 4AD, they did go on to produce one more excellent (if more commercial) album on Polygram Records called 'Viva'. After that the band lost most of its founder members and descended into mediocrity, with a final album in 1989 called 'Devils', then fizzled out altogether.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure German Gothic greatness, 8 Aug 2011

Xmal Deutschland were one of the amazing roster of bands that formed the 4AD / Situation 2 roster. Undoubtedly sitting on the goth side of the 80's, Xmal added a fine cross over between the polished sound of ZTT's Propaganda and the ethereal musings of Cocteau Twins.

The songs on this album are all pretty strong and as with all product pre digital era it works as an album and therefore should be purchased as such.

This truly is a lovely dark record and along with a host of other bands to me prove that rather than being a musical void of pappy pop nonsense, there were a host of brilliant and adventurous bands who combined electronica with rock from a dark side that sought out a more emotional view of the era.

A great album from a very good and probably little heard band. The words, 'suck it and see' come to mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best 80's Euro bands, 14 July 2012

Xmal were an excellent band and I was fortunate to see them live twice in Manchester at the International and then a third time supporting my all time favourite band The Stranglers at the Manchester Apollo. It was a shame they didn't keep up the high energy and drifted apart later in the 80's. Tocsin is my favourite album, but Viva does have its place too.

Have it on original vinyl and time to listen to it in the car (I am an old fashioned cd-user). Great stuff if you don't mind lyrics in German

4.0 out of 5 stars The Second and Final Album, 6 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Tocsin (Audio CD)
This second and final album was released just as xmal were getting the recognition they deserved! A great album although more 'studio'than 'Fetisch' - the first and best LP. Anja Huwe's vocals are as haunting as ever, the best examples being on 'Reigen' and 'Mondlicht'. There is also a bonus track on this CD 'Incubus Succubus II' which is a reworking of xmals first 12" single. Check out 'Fetisch' for a more 'raw' introduction, but complement it with 'Tocsin' for the complete picture.
