1.0 out of 5 stars What a con!
This is not 'The Lion King'. It is 3 Elton John videos, some badly animated stories and an 'educational' package which purports to help your child learn to read. We'd been saving it as a treat. Massive disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Problems accessing the Original 1994 Version on Special Edit, 4 Nov 2003

In my option this is the Best Film that Disney have made, the DVD quality has just made the film more enjoyable to watch. The extras on Disc 1 & 2 make this a must have for any Disney Buff or any one with young children.

I did had problems accessing the Original 1994 Version on Special Edition DVD, the “play” icon on the main menu just seemed to play the New Version of the Lion King.

I called Buena Vista Home Entertainment, they informed me that you need to do the following;

Wait for the main film menu to appear, then go to set-up Icon, in set-up go to the Languages Icon and lastly in Language menu you will find Original Version, (just under Hebrew).

Thank you for reading my review and I hope it helps anyone who thinking about buying this DVD or anyone who had the same problem as me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to make you hyperventilate, 30 Nov 2003

The Lion King has got to be Disney's best movie of all time. If sales figures are correct, and you already own three copies of The Lion King on VHS, then there's no real point describing the plot of the film, beyond the fact that its wonderful art, award-winning songs, and loveable characters are good enough to make you sob into your Lion King hankerchief. In a good way. And you'll have been licking your lips in frantic anticipation of the Special Edition DVD. And believe me, it's been well worth the wait.

And the Gift Set is no less wonderful. For a start, it contains the Special Edition DVD, with its 2 disks with beautiful disk art, the special features of games, interveiws with the animators and such, the film itself in all its improved glory, and in general, three wonderful hours of bonus material.

After you've enjoyed the film, you can then enjoy up to eight original drawings of the characters to keep in your cupboard in an airtight box so that you don't wear them out by looking at them too much, and most wonderfully of all, the DVD companion Hardback, 'The Journey'. This describes the making of TLK, the making of the TLK Special Edition DVD, and has some lovely pictures in it as well. These are found only in the Gift Set.

All of this is wrapped in a special box with beautiful art.

It takes a lot for me to give any film FIVE stars, but here is TLK in all its greatness.

A small warning - despite being a very limited edition of the Special Edition, the DVD contained within the Gift Set does not contain any more special features than it does when purchased on its own. The extra money is paid for the book, pictures and box. The Gift Set is for adult collectors, not children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 25 April 2006

Disney are known for creating amazing tales but this one, along with the animation the powerful voices for the characters, and the amazing music makes this a truly breathtaking Disney classic!

I saw this film when it came out in the cinema, and I have watched it so many times since then as I think it should be regarded as one of the best animated films out there.

I was lucky enough to get hold of this version of the DVD and I would totally recommend adding it to your list today! One of the best Disney films out there.

I grew up watching Disney films, and have seen most of the classis, but this for me is the ultimate classic. Its got laughs its tear jerking moments and above all it's a film that has proved the test of time and deserves its classic status. So buy it while you can because you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars maybe my best disney classic, 26 Sep 2006
I saw this classic disney when i was about 8 years old, and after all these years I still love it. This truly is my favourite disney animation film ever. I mean I like almost every disney films, but this one sticks in my mind more. From the plot, the "circle of life", to the characters (my favourite had always been timon and pumba) and of course the music. Everything in this film is, and will be to me, a classic. I would have given it more stars if I could (and boy would I!!!!). It captivates both children and adults alike. that's all I can say really.

4.0 out of 5 stars The last great old-style animated film?, 20 Mar 2006
By Greg Farefield-Rose (Hertfordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Made in 1994, The Lion King is arguably the last great old-style animation film before the arrival of more edgy, in your face computer-designed animations such as Shrek and Madagascar. It’s an epic story of love and betrayal in a grand setting of the African plains.

Although The Lion King is mainly based around the central plot there is some side humour, especially from Timon (a meerkat) and Pumbaa (warthog) companions to the main lion Simba during his isolation as a young adult. An immense epic animation, which is well worth seeing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complete package., 22 Dec 2003

A great solid Disney film, accompanied by toys. Bonus!

There is very little else to be said about the film other than very well animated, warm, emotional and fun. The songs catch on without being grating, despite the sugary content. The standard Good verses Evil plot is well played out.

If it got my 2 1/2 year-old engrossed in the actions of characters, it's got to be good! Plus when the film is over the 1" long toys of Simba, Mufasa, Scar, Timon, Pumbaa, and Banzai (a hyena), can be played with in the box, which folds out to form a jungle scene. You can even read the Storybook included as well.

For this price, including the extras, this is highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars lion king collecters edition, 3 Nov 2003
fantastic a must for any collector i bought it for my son for christmas but i ended up keeping it for myself. The theatre with the 6 figures is great and the film and special features are fantastic i enjoyed the film the first time round but this is even better. earl makes the lion king come to life with his voice over.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Ultimate Disney Classic - every home should own -, 11 Mar 2004
So why do I considor "The Lion King" to be a classic and state every home should should have one copy of this film you question will be answered in my review (I hope)

Firstly I would like to point out the fact that this is the re-release of the movie and it is the first time it has been put onto Disney DVD.

Now to move on to why you should own this dvd. "The Lion King - Special Edition" is well worth splashing out money on even if you have the original 1994 video edition of the film why? you ask well this DVD doesnt only have the original version of "The Lion King" but it also has another version with an extra song added entitled "The Morning Report" and it has been touched up so its looks even better, to conclude that it has 2 different versions of the movie.

For those who never seen the movie before I will go through what the basis of the plot is like (NO SPOILERS) "Simba" a little lion is desting to be king but is led astray by his amitious uncle "Scar" but things are more complicated than that, I dont want to give to muc of the story away but that is the basic plot but with alot more going on in the story and some ultimate sad moments in this story. This is entertainment for the entire family with its uplifting messages of courage and loyalty and hope.

There are plenty of extras on this DVD to keep you amused for hours on end, this is worth money in itself.

Some people seem to have trouble trying to find the second version of the film and say it is not included but it is so to clear that problem up ill state were you have to go to find the second version(THE ORIGINAL) of "The Lion King" now.

Put disc one into your DVD player then click on the language to suit your choice after one or two trailers this should take you to a bird flying (Zazoo) to were you will get you main menu in a second. On the menu go to SET-UP and click on it this should take you to were the set-up screen. Next click on languages were it has the set-up for both versions of the film (SPECIAL EDITION & ORIGINAL THEATRICAL) to change the versions click on English 5.1 DTS under either heading for what film you want. Now exit out of that to the set-up main menu and at the bottom it should say return to film, click on that and you should have the choiceof the version you wanted. The DVD will always start up with SPEACIAL EDITION version.

I would also like to point out that the soundtrack to this movie is outstanding and you will be singing each song for quite some time after.

To conclude my review I would say this is a must buy for people of any age and is a 100% classic DVD with great extras and great movie and every home should own a copy. Then get the soundtrack, you wont be dissapointed with either product

Thanks for reading
