5.0 out of 5 stars A rough gem!, 28 May 2002

This review is from: Smalltime/Where's The Money, Ronnie? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Smalltime is a gem of a film. It's a rough gem admittedly but a rare and beautiful find, a funny British movie. The film tracks a few weeks in the life of two pals, Malco (played by Matt Hand) and Jimbo (director Shane Meadows). From the first sequence "This ain't England man, this ain't even f**kin' Nottingham, this is Sneinton, and all that matters in Sneinton is 'avin' a tenner in your pocket, dunt matter 'ow you get it" the film takes you on a very funny jouney indeed. The two and their crew steal dog food, kid's bikes from car boot sales and tennis rackets from the hallways of houses in Wollaton. The pair and their gang are truly smalltime. The greatness of this film is in the relationship between Malco and Jimbo. Jimbo is a bullying quasi-father figure to Malc, and will not let him forget it. Malcolm's wife wants him on the straight and narrow and aims to draw him away from the wife-beating Jimbo. The farce that follows is hilarious, with subtleties that make it worth watching over and over again. Sun house's tunes over the top send a melancholic shiver down the spine of this comedy and give it a humane edge. People from Nottingham will love this more than others, but all should try it, if not just for Malc and Jimbo's wives' 'shellies'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 19 April 2003
This review is from: Smalltime/Where's The Money, Ronnie? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I watched this with a group of friends in a farmhouse on Skye in 1997 - a rare evening in. It was one of the best films I've seen in a long time and it had all of us roaring with laughter.
I counted the days until it was available on video.
A rare treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars far too funny to describe in one line-watch it!, 14 Oct 2000

small time has too many funny bits to appreciate in one viewing. director shane meadows shows his comedy genius on both sides of the camera.if you don't think this is funny then you must have suffered from a comedy bypass.i cannot recommend this film enough.set in snenton-even the name is funny- a small towm near nottingham, it charts the struggle of a group of friends to make ends met, from the opening scene of them stealing dog food through to the calamitous raid on the offices of the "save the fishes" campaign it is packed with hilarious scenes as well as tender moments. the excellent soundtrack from sunhouse is also not to be missed. i challenge anybody not to laugh
