5.0 out of 5 stars Always - you'll want to watch it again and again...
Overshadowed by the popularist 'Ghost' which also features the same haunting music - this is one of my all-time favourites... Big, big stars in this one and the biggest star is also the littlest - the divine, petite Holly Hunter, who plays a fantastic role as the life on hold girlfriend who Dreyfuss (deceased) will not let go - hence his role as ghost.... Sentimental,...

Sentimental, moving - sort of a weepy - remake of a 1930's film a Guy named Joe or Sam... Look out for the beautiful Audrey Hepburn in cameo ...
Why Ghost got all the acolades is beyond me....

4.0 out of 5 stars Always... a decent feel good movie, 27 Mar. 2005

This review is from: Always [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
A good Spielberg film from about 1990, this is a nice and easy romantic comedy, it's one of those classic sunday afternoon films.
It's kind of in 2 parts (you'll understand)
The basic story is: Richard Dreyfuss and John Goodman are airbourne fire fighters who obviously put out forrest fires by bombing them with water, Dreyfuss a bit of a risk taker obviously does this in a rather recless manner.
Dreyfuss has a longterm girlfriend Holly"love that accent"Hunter a tough lil tom-boy cookie, wants it to go further though he seems far than bothered about it, until he goes out on a mission and tries to tell her as he gets in the plane... but she doesn't hear him. He then sacrifices himself to save his friend Goodman in his usual maverik way.
Enter Audrey Hepburn (in her last ever film appearance) as the kind of guide to Dreyfuss's spirit who has unfinished business on earth and can't let go until Holly knows how he felt about her.... enter a dashing young pilot who wants Holly and as it happens Dreyfuss is charged by Hepburn with being his guardian angel with some hilarious consequences!
There you are in a nutshell!
I really enjoyed this nice feel-good romatic comedy and would really recomend it for those lazy sunday afternoons when you are feeling a bit down!

Always is a landmark film in Steven Spielberg's canon for more than one reason. It would be the first time Spielberg would adapt someone else's work, and also it would see Spielberg caught in transition between bidding farewell to childhood memories and a crowd pleasing necessity. In fact it is not too bold to say that without Always, Spielberg could not have progressed into the superlative director he most assuredly is. Often wrongly thought of as a Spielberg flop, it actually grossed $74,134,790 worldwide, that's three times what it cost to make. Always is awash with sentimentality, the kind that Spielberg detractors use to constantly berate the director as being his safe haven calling card, yet it's an oddly tender movie about loss, love and the need to move on from former yearnings. Working from the excellent original source by Dalton Trumbo called A Guy Named Joe, Spielberg crafts his tale with deftly visual flourishes aiding the sweet nature of the piece, none more so than when Audrey Hepburn arrives {in her last film appearance} as Pete's angel guide, Hap.

Richard Dreyfuss takes the lead role of Pete Sandwich, with both he and Spielberg sharing a passion for A Guy Named Joe. So much so that Spielberg honoured a promise to Dreyfuss back in the Jaws days that he would cast him should he ever remake the film. Holly Hunter takes on the pivotal female lead of Dorinda and does brilliant work, all doe eyed beauty fusing with tight emotion that has the discerning viewer eating out of her hands. John Goodman is suitably ebullient as Al Yackey, with Spielberg framing him rather well in certain scenic sequences, while the only weak link in the film is probably Brad Johnson as Ted Baker, but time has been kind to his performance and it doesn't quite jar as much as it used too. The critics hated it on release and the watching public were most indifferent to it as well. Yet it's definitely one to revisit as we all get older, be it with a loved one or during times of reflection. You obviously can't get away from the sentimental aspects of it, but sometimes sentiment is a necessity to smooth out those rough edges. Charming, delightful and a real important film in Steven Spielberg's career. 7/10

5.0 out of 5 stars An unlikely film from Spielberg..., 19 Oct. 2003

Steven Spielberg's tale of love defying death is a good premise for a story and he does very well. Richard Dreyfus plays the fire pilot who dies trying to save some forest fire men who are trapped by a large blaze. He is recruited by Audrey Hepburn (of all people!) to return to earth and act as a guardian angel/trainer for another young pilot. Little does he know, that he is also there to help his girlfriend (Holly Hunter) and friend (John Goodman) come to terms with his sudden death and move on with their lives. Some good performances from the main players and a joy to see Hepburn on the big screen again in this small cameo. A good solid movie that will leave you with a smile, if not some tears, on your face.

I would place this film on the same level as Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, Message in a Bottle and City of Angels, If you enjoy tearful love stories straight from the directors heart then this is a must. Wonderful acting from both.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SPIELBERG CLASSIC, 21 Sept. 2011

CONTRARY to what you may have read elsewhere, this wonderful film DOES NOT mark a "low-point" in Steven Spielberg's directorial career. Given time (no pun itended) "Always" will, I believe, go on to be regarded as a classic. It explores the likelihood of survival after what we call death in a gentle, heart-warming, compelling way. So, if you can embrace that notion ... that truth! ... you will, like me, watch "Always" again and again, and never tire of it. Thoroughly recommended, especially to those who understand the fundamental spiritual, eternal nature of life itself. David Lowe

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed it, 6 April 2014

I loved this film it had quite a few well known actors and the great Holly Hunter is the female lead, there's even a few scenes with the CSI actress Marg Helgenberger too. Brad Johnson is my favourite he's the new young pilot who instantly falls in love with the girl of his dreams but she's already taken. It tells of the pilots who back-up the forest fire-fighters with aeriel drops to help clear a path for them to get through, they have to fly quite low into the fires to get near enough to drop their loads at the right moment and on target to put them out straight away, they are the fire-fighters life-line. After making a string of mistakes and with a bit of help from an old-hand ( I won't spoil it by going into too much detail) he finally gets it right and love wins through. A great film.

Her appearance alone is worth the purchase, but it's a good movie with a superb cast. Richard dreyfus has that special something that gives a character 'meaning'...saw him in "The Competition" with Amy Irvine, another great movie ....well I think so!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Richard Dreyfuss triumph, 24 Jun. 2012

Yes I know some might say that Richard Dreyfuss is a little bit over the top at times and has been known to ham it up a bit in some roles.
But let's face it you can't help but love his style, he never fails to capture your attention with his shear presence on screen ever since his appearance as Curt in 'American Graffiti' in 1973
What can I say I love this film but then I love 99.9% of all Steven Spielberg films there is just something about his way of telling a story.
If you watch this film I don't think that you will be dissapointed.

Always, is a classic tale of love for better or worse, and finds our main characters accepting each others faults as well as each others good points, interlaced with humour. Set in the backdrop of forest fire fighting, we learn how the couple and their best friend come to terms with the tragic loss of the character played by Richard Dreyfuss and how the three of them learn from their grief and find peace before moving forward, and in the case of Holly Hunter, finding new love.
