5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional package
First a word on DVDs. Reviewing opera on DVD is not easy, with a CD there are several factors to consider, the quality of the singing, the orchestra, the conductor, and the quality of the recording. With DVD in addition you have to worry about the acting, the casting, costumes, the setting, lighting, choreography, synchronisation between video and sound and the quality...

3.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps could be better
This version seems to be from the original French film, which opens with a bullfight sequence that was omitted when shown in the UK. As with many films based on musical scores, the sound reproduction leaves much to be desired, possibly because the original soundtrack was in Dolby coding, and the result is somewhat uneven so that standard DVD equipment does not do justice...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Bizet's Carmen, 21 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having watched Carmen on VHS & DVD I had to get the restored version on Blu-Ray.
This is beyond doubt one of the best adaptations of an opera onto the big screen. Julia Migenes defines the role of Carmen which is a hard to follow act, her delivery and expression pour out the passions in this beautiful character who will draw you under her spell as she does Placido Domingo as Don Jose. Domingo is in great form as The soldier away from home and missing his intended Faith Esham as Micaela. Carmen goes all out to seduce Don Jose and succeeds, well the rest of the story I'm sure most people know and if you don't I won't spoil it for you. Francesco Rosi the director filmed Carmen on location and the scenery is beautiful. I personally can find little fault with this movie and for that reason I would recommend it to everyone.

I have to say that this is not my favorite carmen, but it is a nice one.. Julia miguenes Johnson is fabulous in the role of a very hot, sexy and gipsy minded carmen,, Pladico Domingo, who by the way, is SPANISH , and not at all italian ( no matter what the paper inside the DVD folder says,,) is amazing as a jealous, passionate Don Jose..

and yes. it works.. carmen takes your heart and , even if there s some differences with the orioginal operas (some recitatives have been turned into dialogues..) the whole experience is great and enjoyable .

i m glad i bought that DVD

It really confirmed what I suspected : Carmen was one hell of a hot floozy ...

CARMEN: i know the opera very well, but when i saw it was sang by placido Domingo and Innes i juST had to buy it and can recommend it to opera lovers.
Innes is ideal as Carmen,as a singer, physically as well as attractive personality and a sexy flirty low class woman.Domingo is a pleasure to listen to and is very much real as rejected lover.
The rest of the cast like "his village youth girl friend" Michaela, has a wonderful lovely voice too. The toreador part is also to be appreciated. In short buy it,enjoy it and add it to your collection, you will enjoy a splendid evening.
