This review is from: Universal Soldier: The Return [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
Luc Devereaux, the only surviving member of the original Universal Soldier Team now works with Dylan Cotner, on a project to create and improve a new Universal Soldier.

Their plan is for the Universal soldier to be controlled by a computer they call SETH.

When the government decides to terminate the project, which includes shutting down SETH, he takes steps to prevent this. He first kills Dylan. He then has himself transfered into a body.

He seeks out Luc, who is the only person who knows the code that will stop his program from being deleted.

Luc must try and stay away until SETH is deleted, but SETH has targeted his daughter as possible leverage.....

Another Van Damme random movie here, which is bad by any means, but so much fun while it lasts. The makers have obviously taken the late nineties for granted, and have put pointless rock music into action sequences, and included a cyber punk called Squid, who looks way too old to have that hair.

Van Damme is as good as always, but Berkeley usurps him in the acting chops (of course). Luckily for Van Damme, he gets killed early on, so his acting compared to Goldberg and Jai White, is Oscar material.

The film is edited poorly, and Romeo has a habit of saying awful lines every time Luc hits him, but it's a lot of fun.

It's never boring, never really irritates anyone. Or does any harm.

Well, not much anyway....

Universal Solder - The Return, is the second theatrical film in the Universal Soldier franchise. Although, not included in the Universal Soldier continuity with the recent release of Universal Soldier Regeneration [DVD] [2009], this is still a very watchable film, whilst clearly being a B Movie.

The film itself has been produced on a much smaller budget than the original, Universal Soldier [DVD] [1991], which in my opinion adds to this films appeal. Due to not being able to pack the film with big budget special effect explosions, the film relies on more martial arts skills and also on more inter character dialogue as well which gives this film more depth than the average B Movie.

Included on the DVD alongside the movie there are also some very interesting interviews with Jean-Claude VanDamme and Michael Jai White in the special features which combined with the very cheap price of this product, gives this film an excellent value for money.

Overall, whilst the film clearly won't win any awards, it is very watchable and will be of interest to any Jean-Claude VanDamme fan, action movie fan or someone who wants a cheap and enjoyable evening alone or amongst friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Further adventures of Unisol, 24 Mar 2013
This 1999 film concerns further attempts to improve the Universal Soldiers assisted by a new super computer. Luc Deveraux as played by Claude Van Damme who managed to survive the original program by coming back from the dead is back as a technical expert. Things go awry and its up to Devereux to save the day.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of Van Damme's best acted roles., 15 Oct 2000
By A Customer
In the sequel to the original Universal Soldier, which was a box office hit, Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his return as now devoted father and widower Luc Deveraux, he is now a technical expert on the new unisols project, but it all goes wrong when the computer (S.E.T.H) decides to take over the Unisols project, as he knows the goverment can not afford to keep the project going which would mean destruction of SETH. But for SETH to do this he need's a password, which only Luc Deveraux knows, how ever mayhem breaks lose, and Van Damme has to battle the unisols which are 2.5 stronger than any man to stop SETH. In which I think this was some of Van Damme's best acting in the film, Michael Jai White as the body and voice of SETH, was very good, his vocal skills were used well in the film, and other roles played by WCW Star Bill Goldberg was impressive, he looks very charismatic on screen, and pulled off his role of the bad guy brilliantly. There are good fight scene's in the movie as well, mostly towards the end, the best being Luc Deveraux(Van Damme) v SETH (Michael Jai White) they both show some great kicks in this fight and is enjoyable to watch. All in all this movie is a great sequel to the original Universal Soldier, it may not be as good as the first, but there is plenty of action in the film, so I give it the thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars An action extraveganza,simply superb., 25 Mar 2000

This review is from: Universal Soldier: The Return [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
This sequel has to be one of the best and most enthroling follow ups i have ever come across. Jean-Claude Van Damme has to be at the peek of his acting career. One of the other characters Bill Goldberg ( A WCW WRESTLING SUPERSTAR)plays the part of Romeo a unisol set to seek out Van Dammes character Luc Deveraux and take him to Seth. Overall this film has an explosive beginning and an equally explosive ending.

1.0 out of 5 stars The film that cashed in, and let the fans down!, 20 Jun 2010

This review is from: Universal Soldier: The Return [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
After watching the excellent "universal soldier regeneration", i went back to "universal soldier 2: the return" to compare the differences and believe me, the latter is near unwatchable for pure cringe factor.
"universal soldier 2: the return", is basically a poor, tv comedy version of the original film. Sadly it is neither funny or even entertaining on any level. This film should never have been made. Plain awful. Stick with "universal soldier 1" and "universal soldier regeneration" instead. As these films deliver what's expected with far more talent and directorial quality. "universal soldier 2: the return", offers no more than a non-sensical, abomination of an attempted film. Pretend it dose not exist and everything is good.

A great all action movie with the great Van Damme and Big Bill (The Man) Goldberg, knocking the stuffing out of each other.
In my opinion, better than the original, the fighting never stops, and Goldberg has a bigger part in the film than the credits would suggest.
If you are a fan of either of these giants, then this is the movie for you.
Well worth watching!

This does not have the darkness of the original , Jean Claudes Luc seems to be completely cured of his past with a kid HUMMMMM, the new Unisol 2000s are charmless dopes , physically imposing but when they talk you just want to laugh.

If you want to see a proper follow up to the original Universal Soldier then get the REGENERATION sequel.

While I like the first "Universal Soldier" as a good average movie, this second movie in the sequel is quite bad.

If you like the first movie, you may like the third one as well, but don't bother buying the second one. You won't miss anything by skipping this second movie. The plot and the acting is quite bad.
