5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT FILMS - BRILLIANT BOXSET
What a great boxset - almost perfect even! Two of the best animated films of all time plus an extras disc. Wow! The first film is extremely good, highly entertaining, awe inspiring and funny on all levels that appeal to both children and adults. The second is the same but bigger and better with a superb storyline. And the extras disc is also awesome, over nine hours worth...

2.0 out of 5 stars Toy Story
This is a totally outrageous film. It had me laughing from start to finish. Being the first ever computer relamnated animation film ever, I expected it to be good. It wasn't. I think anyone should watch this film, it is simply an aramic classic. If even drove me to go out and buy an anorak just like Mr. Potato Head's! A must - see.

The first film is extremely good, highly entertaining, awe inspiring and funny on all levels that appeal to both children and adults. The second is the same but bigger and better with a superb storyline. And the extras disc is also awesome, over nine hours worth of fun in a whole boxset. Check out the "deleted animation" section - great, especially the computer glitches area where Buzz Lightyear's legs and eyes are in the wrong place! Hilarious! This DVD package would be perfect if there were commentaries on the films and I was highly disappointed in not finding any! Apart from that - buy it for you, for the kids, for the whole family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous package, but no commentaries!, 29 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Wonderful films, wonderful extras, but PAL viewers beware - the Region 2 Ultimate Toy Box is devoid of audio commentaries, even though they are mentioned in the little collector's booklet which comes with the package (and extant on the NTSC Region 1 release). Obviously the commentaries (and the promised 5.1 effects-only tracks) were jettisoned because PAL video takes up more space on a DVD than NTSC, but it's still disappointing that Disney didn't mention that fact in their literature for the PAL release. However, this is still is fabulous package for any "big kid" out there who loves Pixar's first-class brand of animation. I bought this set for my kids, but I'll probably end up getting more enjoyment out of it than they will!

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuine classic, 20 Jan 2005

The start of the amazing Pixar success story.

A brilliant film that works on a number of different levels - appealing to children and adults without resorting to in-jokes and movie references. There are also complex subtexts addressing Woody coming to terms with not being the favourite and Buzz coming to terms with the fact that he is actually a toy.

The animation is fantastic (it was totally groundbreaking when the film was first released in the cinemas). The vocal talent is used supremely well - I am not sure that Tom Hanks has ever done anything better; Tim Allen certainly hasn't (unless it is Toy Story 2).

This is a five-star film (if not more).

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the sequel!, 15 Mar 2000

Computer animation has come an awfully long way since 'Tron'! 'Toy Story' was the first completely computer-generated feature film, but the filmmakers went the extra mile and thought up a good script and some cool characters to go with it. The film is never show-offy about the technology - it's just like a new form of cartoon, really. Woody and Buzz are great main characters - both are rivals for the heart of Andy, their rarely-seen human owner, and they're voiced so well that they seem to have real personalities. Buzz is initially brash and arrogant, but you end up loving him as much as Woody. Lots of the supporting 'cast' (!) are good too - especially the cute little three-eyed aliens and the scary broken-toy hybrids. This is a film you can watch over and over again, for the details, so it's definitely worth buying it on video.

i gave it 5 stars coz i couldnt give it more so this is the least it deserved. If you havent watched it........guess what...watch it now

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable movie for the whole family, 23 Jan 2004
This review is from: Toy Story [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
A touching, funny and exciting movie which introduces us to Buzz Lightyear, Woody and their playroom pals.
Great plot, great characters and great jokes all add up to a monster movie.
Should be recommended viewing for everyone - even those who dislike animated features. My dad who normally hates these kind of movies was transfixed! The kids wore out the VHS so thank god for DVD!
Our family prefer it to Toy Story 2 as we love Buzz and there is more of him in the first film. Its a close call though. Our favourite animated movie ever and we've seen them all!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll never throw away another Toy!, 30 Sep 2002
Disney have improved on Toy Story, which is a huge achievement.
It is great for Kids on a Kid level but it has so much to offer to adults too.
The original film explored the idea that Toys come to life when their owners are not around and that they exist as mini-guardians to their children. Toy Story 2 obviously continues the theme but also explores new territory. The big question is TS2 is "what happens to a toy when its child owner grows up". The original characters return for more of the same sharp humour and jokes that work on Child and Adult level.
When Cowboy Woody is captured by an unscrupulous Toy Collector he learns that he is in fact a valuable Toy and missing piece of a collection. He is flattered and is torn between his new life as a celebrity Toy and his old life as his owner Andys favorite.
While all this is going on, Space Ranger Buzz and the gang are mounting a hilarious rescue mission for Woody which is laugh out loud funny.
Meanwhile Woody meets Cowgirl Jessie, part of the Toy collection and learns of how she became part of the soon-to-be Museum Collection. Jessie sings "When she loved me" and the story is told in flashback, charting the relationship between Jessie and her beloved owner and how gradually she was outgrown. It really is a heartbreaking couple of minutes and if you arent moved by it, check your pulse. What could have been sentimental and maudlin is beautifully judged and more effecting than an animated film should be!
From here the story moves to Woody and Jessie, with the assistance of Bullseye the horse making their escape and returning to Andy and where they feel they belong.
This is a perfect film that is a joy from start to finish.
A word of warning. Once you have seen this, you will never throw away another Toy, because as I now know, they have feelings too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The very first feature computer anim, and still the best!, 24 Jun 2006

This review is from: Toy Story [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Toy Story is definitely a film that a kid should watch before they are a teen. Its adventure and great sense of humour is appealing to adult audiences as well, and the atmosphere is brilliant. This really is a Toy Story. The plot is indeed quite simple, and it would have to be for a classic family. Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks)is a toy 'sheriff' doll, owned by a young boy called Andy. Woodys Toy life couldn't as Andy loves him a lot, but as Andy's birthday party arises tension fills the bedroom with each toy living in fear of being replaced. Everything goes well till the last birthday present is opened.. enter Buzz Lightyear!

I would be criminal to tell you the rest of the story, but as far as humour and adventure are concerned, this film impresses in both categories. The toys different personalities really contrast and make you laugh, from the smart-chat of Mr. Potatoe head, to Slinky who is Woodys best toy friend. Its so easy to follow this film - the plot and characters are easy to watch the computer graphics are top notch. Compared to modern day CGI kids films, this stands out purely because of its innocence - a simple story, theirs no techno-babble, and its really fun. It was the first complete animation via computer, and still the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent viewing for children and adults alike, 8 Dec 2000
By A Customer
A very funny and entertaining set of films, your children will want to watch them again and again and so will the adults. There are a lot of funny innuendoes that the children won't pick up on but the adults will appreciate. I defiantly recommend this for viewing

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Way to Collect These Movies, 11 Feb 2003
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Toy Story, released in 1995, enters the world of toys when their owners aren't around. It centers on Woody, a cowboy, who is Andy's favorite toy. But when Andy gets Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger, Woody's place is jeopardized. Woody has to deal with his feelings of jealousy, especially when he and the delusional Buzz become lost toys.

Toy Story 2 followed 4 years later and is the rare sequel that is at least as good as the original, if not better. This time, an evil toy collector has kidnapped Woody, and his head swells when he finds out how valuable he really is. Can Buzz and the other toys find him before he decides he doesn't want to return to Andy?

Toy Story will forever have a place in cinema history as the first completely computer animated movie. But Pixar did a great job making sure it's a movie people will enjoy seeing years from now. The toys are sympathetic characters and the story is wonderful. The site gags and animation make it a treat for adults as well.

Toy Story 2 works as well as it does because it builds on the base of the first movie to tell a second story. Pixar introduced new characters and a fresh story idea while still letting us see and enjoy the characters we loved from the first movie. And the animation has only gotten better over time. Yet the animation is there to tell a story, and the story telling and humor never lag.

The Ultimate Toy Box is a must for collectors or anyone interested in the animation process. Not only are the two movies showcased well on their respective discs, but the extras are phenomenal. I have spent hours going through the third disc soaking up information and trivia. The features commentaries on the first two discs are a fascinating look into what really goes into making these movies. I learned so much from them alone.

The two Toy Story movies will long be remember for being great films. Any film collector owes it to himself or herself to have both in their collection. And if you want to learn the most about these two movies, the people behind them, and what it took to make them, buy the Ultimate Toy Box. You will be entertained and educated for hours.
