4.0 out of 5 stars very atmospheric and very entertaining
I thoroughly enjoyed Final Analysis and that was because there was plenty to think about in this slow-moving film with a substantial plot.Kim Basinger and Uma Thurman were excellent as the sisters from hell and Richard Gere put in a good turn as a naive psychiatrist who becomes less naive as the plot develops. There are some really great special effects /stunts in the film...

3.0 out of 5 stars watch and forget
That's how I would summarize this movie. It is a typical US production, well crafted, with simple-enough characters, 2 + 1 handsome actors to please all. San Francisco views are picturesque and undoubtedly help make a pleasant movie. More effort could be placed to have a wittier dialogue, though.

A dark, psychological thriller starring Richard Gere as a psychiatrist who falls in love with the sister of one of his patients, Kim Basinger and Uma Thurman respectively.
I will not go into the plot which twists and turns, but what starts out as a rather slow film, picks up and reaches an exciting climax. The cast are very good and the atmosphere is chilling, ably supported by an extremely strong and effective soundtrack which sets the mood brilliantly.
Overall, it is a most watchable movie which reminds one of something from the Alfred Hitchcock stable.
Not bad at all.

You know Richard is good and, no matter what, he will end well. The mystery is which of the evil sister is really the bad one.
The final scene at the lighthouse reminds too closely of other movies (Hitchcock) and could have been replaced with something more original. It is a weak spot.
You tired from an afternoon spent gardening? or from a day at work? Watch this, and relax.
Oh, and remember, if you just met your girlfriend, please slide the conversation to pathological intoxication, to make sure she is free of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thriller with a whole load of twists in the story, 26 Aug 2013

This movie, directed by Phil Joanou, is a cracker! Diana Baylor (Uma Thurman) visits her psychiatrist, Dr Isaac Barr (Richard Gere) and recommends that he should meet her sister, Heather Evans (Kim Basinger) to get more background on their childhood. Barr does indeed meet up with Heather and has an affair with her. She tells him she is married to a Greek property developer Jimmy Evans (Eric Roberts), who abuses her and is a bit of a hoodlum.
One evening when Evans is being particularly unpleasant, Heather kills him. Now Heather has a condition that carious psychiatrists call pathological intoxication - a hypersensitivity to alcohol, even in small quantities. Heather is arrested for killing her husband but, with Barr's help, pleads `temporary insanity' from the alcohol in the cough medicine she had just taken. So much for the first half of the movie with moves along at a fairly pedestrian pace. But stay with it, because from now on there are twists and turns galore and an ending that was only one of several possible. This is an exemplary thriller with good acting from all the principals. It's good to see Barr's friend in the DA's office, Mike O'Brien (Paul Guilfoyle) outside of the CSI Series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but there's a slight hitch..., 10 Feb 2001
This review is from: Final Analysis [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
Contemporary filmmakers going for something Hitchcockian generally succeed when it comes to the visuals, but often skimp on the characters and the set-up. A perfect example of someone getting it right is David Mamet's 'The Spanish Prisoner' which bypasses the big fireworks completely, taking the slow, methodical route to utmost believability. This, though, is a typically overblown piece of '90s moviemaking which actually features too many plot twists (yes, it is possible!) Phil Joanou, aided by Coppola's regular art guy, Dean Tavoularis, delivers an eye-popping Hitch' type visual thrill (the climactic lighthouse scene is a real treat on DVD), and the cast are top-notch (it wasn't like talent suddenly happened to Basinger prior to her Oscar victory, and she's great here as the film's howlin' nasty) but ultimately, the film serves as brain candy for one night only, and certainly isn't destined for anyone's hall of fame.

2.0 out of 5 stars Low volume with dialogue slightly out of sync, 28 July 2014

This review is from: Final Analysis [DVD] [1992] (DVD)
This had the makings of a good movie if it focused on Heather's husband and his confrontation with Richard Gere. The husband is an echo of Heather's father who raped her as a child, but he is a character in his own right because he abuses Heather, but shrinks when he is challenged by a real man as represented by Gere. This shows that Heather's husband can only bully women rather than men, and it would have been good seeing Gere head to head with Heather's husband. Sadly, her husband only plays a small part in the film, and the rest of the movie tails off into a pedestrian storyline.

Not a good movie.
