5.0 out of 5 stars A rare insight to music in the making
Face Value is by far Phil's best album from start to finish so to see almost track by track how he went about putting it together is a rare treat. This review is from: Phil Collins - Face Value [DVD] (DVD)
Face Value is by far Phil's best album from start to finish so to see almost track by track how he went about putting it together is a rare treat. Throughout the DVD Phil talks openly and frankly about how his life at the time brought much of the inspiration for the album's tracks - the anger of a relationship ending through to the optimism and hope of a new one. Phil discusses tracks such as In The Air Tonight in detail in the studio with demos being played. You not only get an insight into how the songs are written, but the recording process and the sometimes ad hoc nature Phil runs with his ideas. Phil demonstrates how he got the drums sound on the tracks also, again, emphasizing the very experimental way the album was produced. There is also an insight into several of the less well known songs and they're meaning such as The Roof is Leaking which was apparently originally recorded with Eric Clapton. However, even better are the interviews and anecdotes from several of the albums contributers such as Tom Tom Washington and Daryl Stuermyr. The Classic Albums series is an excellent one to own, and even if you're not a great Phil Collins fan this one is clearly one of the best to own.
