5.0 out of 5 stars As good as Batman gets, in any medium, 11 Jan. 2004

A great package. Two videos, four episodes on each. This is from way back in the start of the animated series, so no Robin, just Bats versus a range of classic villains (e.g. Clayface, Scarecrow and a brilliantly demonic Joker ).
The storytelling, quality animation and gloomy, noir feel mean that this adds up to more than your standard kids cartoon. Also, it draws more on the work of Tim Burton and Frank Miller, so we get Bats dangling unco-operative baddies from the front of the Batplane and Joker hurling his 'Babby Bombs' on rollercoasters - definitely not your usual Saturday morning fare.
A dark, stylish version of Batman - I honestly don't think it'll be bettered.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent animated update of comic book hero, 29 Jun. 2000

The Batman Animated Series makes for ripping entertainment for young and old alike. Taking their cue from the Tim Burton movie as opposed to the 60's kitsch spoof version, these stories are gloomily lit, with lots of neat juxtapositions - the Batman character is only marginally more palatable than the villains, such as The Joker, who is hysterically over-the-top throughout. There are also some sly in-jokes for adults, too. For instance, the Joker has two henchmen called 'Rocco' and 'Henshaw' - the same names as Sgt Bilko's stooges in the 50's TV comedy series. The violence is comic book enough not to be too realistic, and the plots and characterisations three-dimensioanl enough to appeal to the fortysomething kid in all of us. Unhesitatingly reccomended.
