4.0 out of 5 stars Come And Get It, 29 Mar. 2005
France's Farmers best example of her acting talent. This is a good melodrama which stands the test of time. It does not seem like a typical 1930's film, mostly down to the high production standards that Sam Goldwyn productions became known for. Farmer plays the dual role of mother and daughter and does this with only the use of a wig for the mother and a set of bawdy mannerisms along with a slightly deeper voice. This film is superbly shot and capture's Farmer's patrician beauty and subtle acting style. Edward Arnold is competent in the role of barney Glasgow, although too old to be believable in the early sequence, playing young Barney. The under rated Joel McCrea is good in his role as is Andrea Leeds who at one point was awarded Farmer's role during preproduction. (She was thought too inexperienced to carry the movie)Howard Hawks lobbied to borrow Farmer from Paramount after seeing some of her early work and working with her on a test.
This is a good film with some excellent lumberjack sequences at the begining and is mainly of interest to fans of the tragic and troubled Frances Farmer.
