4.0 out of 5 stars Brillant, 26 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Deggial (Audio CD)
One thing you can be expecting from 'Therion' is that all its previous album are of high standards and this one is of no exception. I taken much more time to get used this album than 'Vovin' but one thing is for sure, once you start liking that one , you'll get hooked to it(addictive). The guitars are there as well as the orchestra. It is a very good album and i will recommend that one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yet another great Therion album, 26 Aug 2010

If you are into any kind of metal, particularly symphonic or classically influenced heavy metal, then you can't go wrong with Therion. Having got into Therion on the basis of Vovin, Deggial is a great follow on to that album, continuing in a very similar vein. Throughout their career, Therion have experimented quite a bit, and their albums display a wide range of styles and ideas, however, with Vovin and Deggial, they seem to have found a style that works and stuck to it. There is not one single poor song on the album, and there are plenty of fantastic ones, in particular the title track, but all are great and the album is great to listen to as a whole.

For any new Therion fans, or those who haven't tried the band out yet, Therion's music incorporates elements of both metal and classical music (there are even more classical elements in Vovin than in Deggial), combining both heavy and melodic guitars, with male and female vocals, choral elements, and classical instrumentation, for example string instruments in the background. Deggial isn't particularly heavy, although some Therion can be, but it has a great atmosphere, great music and great vocals. I also find that Deggial reminds me quite a bit of Tiamat's equally fantastic album Amanethes, although Tiamat don't use the same level of classical influences that Therion do. Anyway, I would recommend it to any fans of symphonic metal, or other metal fans who would like to try something new, as well as Therion fans who haven't yet purchased Deggial - you won't be disappointed, particularly if you liked Vovin!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Great, 4 May 2001

If you find that Operas are part of the heritage of Gothic Metal, then this CD is for you. The play between voices and music let us fly away to the world of castles, darkness and the middle ages. The songs refer to strong mystical subjects. Like them or not, enjoy the tracks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Equally as good as 'Vovin', 27 Mar 2001

That album is more or less similar to 'Vovin',but some tracks tend to be a little bit darker for example the likes of 'noctune'. It takes a little bit more time to get used to the album than 'Vovin', but I absolutely love the album now. It is excellent.

I got this item in good time, the service was good, which is good as it goes hand in hand with the item purchased, as it is one of the best bands out there, and this is the best album.

This is very similiar to it's predecessor, Vovin, both lyrically & musically. In truth, it's an album that i'm still getting into - It couldn't be classed as an immediate release, more of a grower!
Where it differs from Vovin is that the band upgraded from Vovin's relativeley small string section (a great progression from keyboard orchestration at the time) to a full orchestra including brass, woodwind & percussion.
Of course, there is still the array of male & female choir singers to add the epic & dark touches to this occult, atmospheric sound.
Ironically, the album often has more of a Heavy Metal/Hard Rock presence despite the advanced orchestration on show!
There is definitely a nod towards Iron Maiden at times.
This probably isn't my favourite but it is still a solid Symphonic Metal album & i would listen to it over most of the sewage that passes as music these days!

4.0 out of 5 stars Genius with a cracked edge, 18 Oct 2007

I enjoy metal, goth, classical and choral music. This is a combination of the lot.

The combination of male and female voices are magical, and the orchestral music is brilliant and nicely varied. If you enjoy Nightwish, Evanescence and the like, you will enjoy this album, even if it is a bit darker. It may take a bit getting used to some of the styles used, especially if you're more classically than rock inclined.

Just a caution: When I saw the CD had O Fortuna on it, I jumped to it and ordered it immediately. The version I received has only 10 tracks, and no 'O Fortuna', so be very careful of which version you receive when ordering.
