4.0 out of 5 stars Magical Music, 17 Jun 2009
This review is from: Flower Power (Audio CD)
This double album from The Flower Kings is fantastic. The centrepiece is the 60 minute 'Garden Of Dreams' and it is one of the highlights of The Flower Kings extensive output. In this epic piece and most of Flower Power, the emphasis seems to be on really melodic writing. There are big tunes all over the place unlike some of their later work which seems to revolve around improvised playing.

A lot of people criticise The Flower Kings for releasing too much material and, indeed, I first heard 'Garden of Dreams' referred to as an uneven piece. I am unable to understand this view point. The piece ebbs and flows in terms of mood and texture but never in terms of quality.

The second CD to me is slightly weaker but that only because it has to follow a masterpiece. This CD is as good as any of the discs off the earlier album Stardust We Are.

The sound of the album is lush with lots of synth pads and plenty of reverb used on the vocals. This contrasts with the more dry sounding later cds. If you really like proggressive rock with lots of emotion and hummable melodies, this is the album to buy. I would say it's up in their top three albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweden's best kept secret, 13 Sep 2011
This review is from: Flowerpower (Audio CD)
Having recently bought the wonderfully talented Roine Stolt's solo CD, 'The Flower King', and The Flower Kings brilliant CD 'Retropolis', I 'gambled' on this double CD being good as well. I needn't have worried, as this is an absolute 'Master Work'. Fabulous songs and playing . . . the long 'suite' (Garden Of Dreams) must become a 'classic'. All the small sections/songs are memorable. No needless soloing and filling. Roine Stolt and Tomas Bodin are Prog Rock's Lennon/ McCartney ! This is a must for anyone who loves good Rock/Pop music. Ok, call it Prog Rock if you must. Disc two is a collection of great songs too. 'Stupid Girl', 'Psychedelic Postcard/Hudson River Sirens Call', 'Painter' and 'Calling Home', all awesome songs. My advice is buy it right now. It will become a favourite in your CD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic to the extreme, 1 Nov 2012

This review is from: Flowerpower (Audio CD)
Flower power contains some wonderful music it is a double album and the first album contains the epic 59 minute song garden of dreams. the music is uplifting and happy, complex and also calm and beautiful. some of the song like don't the devil in is rocky. the second disc contains less lengthy epics but equally complex intelligent but fun uplifting music. while most people would not have much time to listen to a whole album this long if you do it is very rewarding.
this music would not be for everyone. for me it is excellent and I have collected all the albums. This one is one of the flower kings most difficult albums to listen to after Unfold the future. But that doesn't make it bad. If you like complex, fun whimsical music try it out for yourself

5.0 out of 5 stars Another brilliant double disc set, 8 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Flower Power (Audio CD)
The Flower Kings produced two incredible double disc sets one right after the other. This recording followed the equally impressive Stardust We Are. There are a number of charactaristics that are remarkable about this outfit. Roine Stolt's guitarwork, Tomas Bodin's keyboard work and Jaime Salazar on drums are some of the finest musicians in not only contemporary prog but of any era. Stolt's compositions and arrangements are complex and rich. The only moments of weakness occur on the one song that Stolt relinquishes the lead vocalist role that he normally assumes so well. A band unrivaled by anything in modern progressive rock. Highly recommended...Simon
