5.0 out of 5 stars A touching, well acted film with a compelling storyline
I think many people may read the plot synopsis and decide the film is not for them. Equally a rating of 18 might imply things about this film which it does not offer - for instance there is no nudity and any sex is simply implied. I think the two best words to describe this film would be beautiful and moving. It is a story of unrequited love, and also of hope and...

3.0 out of 5 stars David Arquette and Lukas Hass excel in JOHNS.
The great strength of Scott Silver's movie JOHNS is the acting. The leads play low life LA male prostitutes or "entertainers" The screenplay, also by Silver, credits 8 real life entertainers for their stories. This adds to the overall realism of the film. Not as flash or theatrical as MIDNIGHT COWBOY or as pretentious as MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, this film...

I think many people may read the plot synopsis and decide the film is not for them. Equally a rating of 18 might imply things about this film which it does not offer - for instance there is no nudity and any sex is simply implied. I think the two best words to describe this film would be beautiful and moving. It is a story of unrequited love, and also of hope and dreams. Becuase it is very well acted you empathise with the characters. This makes the end all the more sad. Lukas Haas does a wonderful job as trusting, kind, Donner. His mannerisms and expressions mark him out as an excellent actor. He works well with David Arquette: both portraying their characters with sympathy and feeling.
The story (which I won't spoil!) is compelling and bears watching many times, to pick up the nuances. A day in the life of these two young men in their quest for money to live out a dream.
This is an unassuming film, and should be much more widely viewed than it is. I guess with its story based around two male prostitutes, it probably won't be. But if that's why you turn it down, you'll be missing a treat.

The great strength of Scott Silver's movie JOHNS is the acting. The leads play low life LA male prostitutes or "entertainers" The screenplay, also by Silver, credits 8 real life entertainers for their stories. This adds to the overall realism of the film. Not as flash or theatrical as MIDNIGHT COWBOY or as pretentious as MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO, this film deserves a far wider and younger audience than the story might suggest. Johns which surprisingly has an 18 certificate in the UK, is NOT a film for voyeurs or those looking for gay porn. What little sex there is in the film, is implied and never explicit.

2.0 out of 5 stars A letdown......., 19 Mar 2012
This review is from: Johns [DVD] [1997] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
After reading several favourable reviews,i expected to really like this but i didnt! Its a film where not much happens, they stand about,do a lot of talking, there is the odd dramatic scene & then it finishes with a very predictable ending which is a variation of the midnight cowboy ending! Id read that its a modern day midnight cowboy but the ending is the only similarity i could find. That film is a classic which i have watched over & over,i wouldnt be watching this again.
