5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, dear God, yes!!!
IT'S METALLICA AND AN ORCHESTRA!!! IT'S INSANITY, IT'S MENTAL,IT'S.... actually frightengly good.

This would the "greatest hits" Metallica said they would never do, so they decided to do something a little out there, and, by George, it's good.

"Master of Puppets" sounds better than the original (3 Metallica purists have just bought sniper rifles),...

3.0 out of 5 stars A brave attempt
Whats great about metallica is that they have the balls to try different things - that fact has caught them a lot of flak from 'fans' over the years. Myself, i still think that they peaked with 'ride the lightning' all those years ago, but that is not to say that there havent been some real classic tracks since cos of course there have

when i heard about the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Metal starting to rust?, 21 July 2007

I have been a fan of Metallica for years, I listen to all kinds of music, so am not closed-minded with regard to the orchestra being on this cd. My main gripe about this c.d. is that there is FAR too much going on...there's FAR too much noise. O.K. I am not a conductor or musical arranger, but this sounds like it really is all over the place, with the orchestra sounding for the most part like it's playing just ANYTHING!!! On occasions turning the whole thing into a cacophany of din.

I have tried listening to this on and off since it came out, desperately trying to like it...I really really can't!

I think this was a BAD BAD idea!!

metallica are a band i have loved for years, their first four albums are without contradiction four of the greatest albums ever, the self titled album is hit and miss, load and reload are poor and st anger is pathetic, the garage days ep is enjoyable however this is too much, metallica in the 90s became household names, they competed for grammys, they were everywhere, they believed their own hype just a little too much, this is a selection of some of their best songs revamped with the help of an orchestra but what we have here is something taken away from the songs as opposed to added to them,i wasnt against the idea when i heard they were doing it but it all sounds so contrived,so pompous and so vain to me,old classics such as master of puppets ,battery and for whom the bells toll sound ok if im honest, its the newer songs which sound so poor and showcase that they were never good in the first place, the setlist can hardly read as a greatest hits of metallica when you include fuel and the memory remains, the two new songs aint worth discussing so i wont, all in all this is a poor rehash of metallicas songs, the band are on their knees now and need a miracle to return to former glories, this wouldnt help matters, poor folks,

1.0 out of 5 stars The not Good, Bad and Ugly, 24 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: S & M (Audio CD)
This is terrible. The best bit is the opening few minutes where the "Gold" theme is played from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly movie. From then on it just gets UGLY - real quick. There's hardly anything to seperate one song/instrumental from the other. It all sounds like one, long, monotonous, drone, with the singer trying to sound tough and macho, by yelling over the top.
As for the music, sound quaity is BAD, it sounds more like a battle: Metallica v SFSO. Listening to this racket made me think I was showhow hearing two different concerts being played at the same time. It's not GOOD - just a mess.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy!!!!!, 14 Feb 2004
This review is from: S & M (Audio CD)
I bought this thinking it would be a great 'live' cd. I played it and i was horrified at how bad it was. The orchestra plays something which doesn't even fit with the original songs. It was way too expensive aswell. The whole purpose of the record is to make more money. Also James Hetfield's voice sounds like its been synthesised and messed with,(like cher). A warning to music lovers: DON'T BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
