5.0 out of 5 stars Exemplary demonstration of lyrical skill and musical magic.
This album illustrates the genius of a singer, producer, writer etc.that Mariah Carey is. Her collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis is nothing short of sheer excellence. This in no way overshadows the work of David Foster, Damizza and the other ground breaking producers who worked on this set.
Mariah demonstrates that her strength lies in vocal mastery and...

2.0 out of 5 stars Ouch..., 8 Oct 2003

This review is from: Rainbow (Audio CD)
All in all, the music's on this lp is pure shallowness, except for some cool moments like the fun "heartbreaker",the beautiful enough "can't take that away",the clever "crybaby" and...well that's about it."After tonight" is supremely boring, just like "bliss" and "petals"."Ex girlfriend" sounds good at first but reveals itself as a filler after some time. And please mariah,do not try to record another tune like "did i do that":it's incredibly horrible! Now the question is:Will you buy a full length album that contains only three interesting cuts?

2.0 out of 5 stars No pot of gold at the end of THIS Rainbow., 16 July 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainbow (Audio CD)
After 1997's decidely more mature and credible effort Butterfly, came Rainbow. Released in Autumn 1999, it was on this recording that Mariah lost any shred of regard that she achieved with Rainbow. Lightweight and formuliac, the album features collaborations with various 'big names' in hip-hop and R&B. Sadly, almost all of these pairings fail to bear fruit. They work best on the slow, late-night jam of Crybaby and the playfully forlorn lead-off single Heartbreaker. Elsewhere, Carey's duet with rising star Usher is labourious in it's delivery and lacks that effervescent spark present in the peppy pop anthems of Destiny's Child. The album also marks a notable decrease in Mariah's reliance on ballads, with more than half of the album relying on upbeat R&B anthems: arguably because her ballads are no longer her forte. Of the six which appear, only the penultimate duo, Petals and Thank God I Found You, come close to former glories. Says it all really.

1.0 out of 5 stars whining weak material, 30 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainbow (Audio CD)
a complete disappointment from la carey. she needs to rest and come up with more original material.
as always with a mariah album there are some quality tracks but these are overwhelmed by some very weak, trite and cliched material, musically and lyrically.
her voice sounds tired and she is whining far too much these days.
against all odds is particularly tragic and thank god i found you is one of the most horrendous songs ever recorded.
