Loud noise, made quietly, 13 Sep 2000
The first full-length release from Essex new-shoegazers Beatglider shows a band maturing far quicker than is generally considered proper. From live beginnings that sounded something like an asexual Placebo, the foursome have developed a sound that's as close to unique as it's possible to get in the year 2000. They're all too often dismissed as Flaming Lips copyists, and though there are certainly similliarites in the sweeping guitars and eccentric lyrics, Beatglider take an obviously British stance on the genre, making room for echoes of Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine and Super Furry Animals to name but a few. Stand-out tracks would have to include the immense "Fall Into My Arms", which builds over 6 minutes to a peak that could only leave the coldest of post-rock hearts unstirred. In the bestest of lo-fi traditions, the "big" tracks such as this are balanced out by a group of inventive and oh-so-slightly kooky pop songs across the album's middle. Tracks in this vein like the alleged indie anthem "Premonition Dragon" can begin to grate after a while, but showcase a range of musical talents unbecoming of their tender years. A strong range of ideas is also shown by the more suprising inclusions such as "Talk Of The South", a tender and heartfelt ballad about a really horrible nightclub on Southend sea-front- an acheievement which surely on it's own should earn them a truckload of awards. Though you can't help feeling that Beatglider would be better if they dispensed with the forced-sounding quirkiness in some songs, this is a highly promising debut from a band who look set to prove that there's a few New Men left in the country after all....
