4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic wizardry-wonderful : ), 13 April 2002

What can you say about the debut recording of a man whose live performance credibility goes before him like a huge red flashing neon sign? Well, you might say 'about time you got a cd out' : ) (albeit actually the first of two)
Eric truly is astounding. From the first bar of the first track you know you are listening to something special. Few people since the sad parting of Michael hedges have truthfully pushed the boundaries of acoustrick folk rock but Mr Roche sets the new benchmark. This appears to be a 'look at me' showcase-type album in that it includes lots of styles and influences, from hornpipes like 'Brandenburg hornpipe' and 'Hornpipe from Water Music' (which for my money is a bit of a two-fingered salute at the classical music establishment with the blues hammer-on at the end) to the double-handed tapping madness that is 'Roundabout'.
Some beautiful moments are the heartfelt 'steel road' and Eric's interpretation of 'dawning of the day'.
There are two brief points in the album where I didn't really hear what was being said. 'Trapeze' is directed a bit more at soundtrack writing and to my mind was a bit of an odd choice for the record. And I think 'Haman' could be a full minute shorter and still say what is was designed to. But music's like fashion-all opinions are contradictions.
In short, if you like people like Michael Hedges, Alex de Grassi or Willy Porter you'll love this. Well worth parting with your hard earned.

Wow. There's not much else you can say after listening to this album.I've never heard a guitar played like this. Not many musicians have the ability to convey EXACTLY what they feel without saying a word. His music is just overflowing with emotion, not to mention talent. My favorite song on the album is definately Steel Road. To me it was a life-changing experience listening to that song for the first time. Truly amazing. And, one last time, wow.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 1 May 2004
This review is from: Perc U Lator (Audio CD)
This is truly a great album for guitar lovers across the board. His use of harmonics in Perc U lator is as refreshing as it is beautiful, the absence of lyrics in this album is amply substituted with further harmonics, guitar body percussion, wind instruments and a general story-telling tecnhique unlike any other musician I have heard of late. I don't think any guitarist can listen to this cd without trying to integrate harmonics into their music further. His version of Norwegian Wood is a classic example of a climatic acoustic piece with what sounds like a kind of eastern wooden flute accompaniment. The funniest thing is I don't even know who this guy is, this cd was a gift. Great album.
