This review is from: Lalo: Violin Concertos etc (Audio CD)
This CD gives great pleasure, I find, with both concertos being full of good melodies and excellent orchestration. Lalo has a way of writing for the violin in a dramatic way that brings out a certain muscularity and rhythmic thrust, and the effect is very exciting. The last movement of the Concerto russe makes you want to cheer for its sheer high-octane fizz and ear-popping splendour. It scrabbles around at the top of the instrument in a way that makes you think of Heifetz, who always made such effects sound huge, somehow. Olivier Charlier has something of the same gleam and Yan Pascal Tortelier is, as always, a brilliant advocate of French music, no doubt helped by being an excellent violinist himself. I can't imagine a better case being made for these neglected plums of the violin repertoire. I'm not too keen on the cover, which seems to have nothing to do with the music and isn't even French. But I don't suppose this matters too much!
