5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive Rose Tattoo album - hard, fast and bluesy., 3 Jun. 2002
By
This review is from: Rock 'n' Roll Outlaws (Audio CD)
Rose Tattoo are perhaps one of the most under-rated bands to emerge at the end of the 70s. Loud, raw, brash and powerful, they're trademark throaty vocals and wailing slide guitar, backed by a no frills rhythm section and powerful rhythm guitar, are at the forefront in this, one of their earliest, releases.
Dogged by the down side of over-endulgence, Angry Anderson's band never broke through into the mainstream. This album is packed full of solid guitars and hard rhythms, with classic tracks such as "Rock'n'Roll Outlaw" and the wonderfully titled "Nice Boys Don't Play Rock and Roll". Cliches abound in Angry's lyrics, but don't expect the middle of the road blues rock offered by many of the more successful blues rock bands. Rose Tattoo are like a rougher, more low down and dirtier version of Bon Scott era AC/DC, but with a little more power added.
When you play this one, make sure you put the cat out, turn the volume up as high as you can and crack open the nearest six pack you can lay your hands on. Its not subtle, but it sure feels good.
It's amazing to think that when the band first imploded Angry's biggest exposure came through providing the lead vocal on Kylie and Jason's love theme in neighbours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative, 6 Feb. 2006

The Aussies have always had the talent for taking something from another country and doing it better. In this case heavy rock has been given the treatment. Rose Tattoo are not just a band but an attitude. Hard rock given added tension by a slide guitar and an anti-social swagger that screams "Rock" at you.
Rock and Roll isn't supposed to be nice. Rose Tattoo are like a razor in your face and you will love them for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic songs but buy Rose Tattoo (Remastered) instead, 1 May 2008

This CD has the same classic songs as appear on Rose Tattoo's eponymous debut album. G 'n' R fans: this is where "Nice Boys" came from. But why would you buy "Rock 'n' Roll Outlaws" when the remastered version of the "Rose Tattoo" album contains bonus tracks not present here?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard hitting, 8 Jan. 2008

Saw this band live and they were heavy and loud. This album is hard hitting rock. Butcher and Fast Eddy is a story of a knife fight almost spoken rather than sang. whereas Bad Boys for Love is the obvious single , fast rock.
Great album.

this is a forgotten gem of rock. At the time (1980) Rose Tattoo were touted as a bit of a poor man's AC/DC but this first album is bonzer! They were obviously a wee bit influenced by AC/DC but they had a much harder punkier edge. The rhythm guitar sound being well raw with their distinctive slide guitar sounding over the top. This is a band playing borstal aggressive rock but at the same time well tight. Angry Anderson's never sounded as raw as on this album. Outstanding tracks NICE BOYS, BAD BOY FOR LOVE, the brilliant tale of THE BUTCHER AND FAST EDDY and the truely banging ASTRA WALLY (it had my 5 year old son playing air guitar and striking rockstar poses!). A joy to replace that jumping vinyl.
