5.0 out of 5 stars A superb and varied recording by two great masters.

This album is a compilation of two recordings made in 1971 and 1978, by two of the greatest classical guitarists ever to have lived, and certainly the two greatest living today. These masters have almost never collaborated, and so these recordings are particularly valuable.
The repertoire here is a beautifully chosen and varied one. It includes pieces that will be familiar to all classical guitar enthusiasts, with compositions by Carulli, Albeniz and Granados. Giuliani's "Variazioni Concertanti" is particularly wonderful, and illustrates writing for the guitar at its peak. Some more unusual choices, transcribed from various settings for guitar duet, include Debussy's beautiful "Clair de Lune" and "Reverie" on CD 1. On CD 2, Faure's "Dolly, Op.56" is a beautifully arranged piece, originally written for piano, four hands, and it suits the intimate sound of the guitar perfectly.
It goes without saying that both Bream and Williams play superbly here, and there is a real sense of joy, both in the wonderful music they both love so much, and in the rare experience of performing with another guitarist who is their equal musically and technically. They play with passion and precision, and seem to revel in every note and nuance of the music.
If you love guitar music, this double album is a must, and since it includes all the material from both "Julian Bream & John Williams - Together" and "Julian Bream & John Williams - Together Again" at around half the price, it's also a real bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A two disc compilation of three original discs and remastered, 26 Nov 2012

This pair of discs is a compilation of the original 'Together' and 'Together Again' recordings from 1971 and 1973 plus 'live' recordings from concerts in 1978 in Symphony Hall, Boston and Avery Fisher Hall, N.Y. The earlier two recordings were made in Bream's home studio.

The sound of the two guitars is very well matched with the later recordings being slightly rounder tonally and the earlier one being slightly crisper tonally. The audiences during the 'live' recordings are very quiet throughout the playing with only slight rustling detectable between tracks and some applause left in and some edited out.

The discs have been remastered with this edition being copyrighted 1994. By comparing them with the original discs from the 1970's it is clear that they have gained in both extra presence and with a more realistic tonal quality. This is therefore a generous and improved compilation.

The playing is one of a kind and has delighted world-wide audiences whenever the two players have been heard together. The program is essentially an attractive selection of arrangements and transcriptions, skilfully done, which retain enough of the originals to be recognisable yet clearly transformed into guitar 'originals.' Inevitably there is a majority of Spanish music by the likes of Albeniz, Granados, Carulli, Sor, Giuliani and de Falla. To these have been added some original lute music by Johnson and arrangements of Ravel and Faure, his 'Dolly' suite usually known in its orchestral guise.

This then is both a generous and interesting program with enough to engage and please anyone. The playing is expert throughout and the recordings have been successfully improved with remastering. I would therefore suggest that this amounts to a most attractive purchase option.

Bought this to replace my long lost LP and after many years still love the expertise of these guitarists. The mood of the music changes from slow and gentle to fast and lively.

Thoroughly enjoyable and certainly worth having. Do not buy Together Again-Julian Bream and John Williams if you buy this CD since some are repeated on this CD. Excellent classical guitar.
