5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Best Of... - Swinging, but Gently
Considering how prolific Oscar Peterson has been throughout his 50 years plus recording career it is highly surprising that this collection is the only "Very Best Of..." currently available.
This compilation takes tracks from his most successful period with the Verve and MPS labels, from 1954 to 1971. The DDD notation on the cover suggests that the recordings are...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Oscar
I'm not a great fan of some of the more pedestrian tracks, preferring his more intricate jazz style. My favourite track was missing!

Considering how prolific Oscar Peterson has been throughout his 50 years plus recording career it is highly surprising that this collection is the only "Very Best Of..." currently available.
This compilation takes tracks from his most successful period with the Verve and MPS labels, from 1954 to 1971. The DDD notation on the cover suggests that the recordings are digital (as if re-recordings) but this is incorrect; they are all originals, just one or two of them showing their age. They have, however, probably been digitally remastered, and it's been done very well indeed, with excellent clarity and dynamic range in most of the tracks.
Oscar Peterson is one of the world's greatest jazz pianists, and firmly in the mainstream of the genre. His playing is exquisitely light of touch, and his arrangements and improvisations never stray far from the original melodies; there are no great innovations or leanings to the avant garde to alienate all but the enthusiast audience. He is backed by bass and percussion, to make up the Oscar Peterson Trio; while the members changed over the years they all sound perfectly in tune with their master.
The selections on this compilation are all drawn from the great well of American popular song, with one or two excursions to Liverpool and France. The sound and tempo of all of them is decidedly easy - they swing, but gently - with the exception of Michel Legrand's "Windmills Of Your Mind", where the brakes are let off with a vengeance. It is a demonstration of virtuoso acoustic jazz trio playing and, while some may argue that it's too mainstream for jazz, it is yet another excellent album for late night listening, and is also a great sampler for anyone who doesn't own any of his original catalogue. I bought this when it came out six years ago, and it's one of my "frequent plays"; I was amazed to see that no-one had written a review of it, until now.

This review is from: Piano Moods: the Very Best of Oscar Peterson (Audio CD)
I bought this album a few years ago it is a mixture of the easy listening and the technically brilliant jazzier tracks like Windmills Of Your Mind I saw him on a tv BBC programme about the greats of jazz and to watch him playing is awesome the fingers were like lightning and he made it look so so easy I always loved Night Train but the whole album is a tribute to the greatest piano player of all time bar none God Bless You Oscar we all miss you !!

Ideal music to relax to when you need me time. Few pianists have the touch of Peterson on the ivory keys.
