5.0 out of 5 stars A classic performance
This is quite simply a classic performance. A wonderful Glyndebourne cast (Bruscantini is the archetypal Figaro) a bargin without equal. At this price no serious collector should be without it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable recording for someone new to opera
Whenever someone asks me where is the best place to start listening to opera, I always says The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart. It is one of those operas that you think you know nothing about, but as you listen to it, you start humming along to the themes. Whenever someone asks me where is the best place to start listening to opera, I always says The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart. It is one of those operas that you think you know nothing about, but as you listen to it, you start humming along to the themes. Having been recorded in 1955, you would think that the sound is awful, suprisingly enough it is not, even the oboe sound is decent, and there is no constant hiss throughout. The singing is good, and the tempo is steady throughout. Although not the best recording of the opera by far, the price of the recording is very tempting. There is no libretto with it, but there is listeners guide explaining what is happening during each track.

5.0 out of 5 stars an early stereo classic, 1 Mar 2014
This review is from: Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro (Audio CD)
Despite small cuts that enable this celebrated reading to be squeezed on to two CDs I can appreciate why a BBC Radio 3 reviewer chose this as a library first choice in 2000. Although it wouldn't be at the very top of my personal list, there is a sense of theatrical pacing about this reading and the cast is a fine one, working well as an ensemble, under Gui's alert direction. There are also moments of outstandingly beautiful singing. The sound as early stereo is pretty good on the whole and the performance is a valuable addition to the library, in my case alongside the Giulini and Solti recordings.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok...until you listen, 31 Dec 2007

I had this recording for years and was quite happy with it. Then I listened more carefully as I was working on the PC and found it a big disappointment.

The singing was accurate but lacked warmth and passion, which is strange because it has some good names on it. A rather wooden performance I felt. I've given it away and invested in a better copy.
