This review is from: Symphony No.4, Academic Festival Overture, Tragic Overture (Audio CD)
Despite being one of the cornerstones of the classical catalogue during the sixties and seventies, these recordings have not worn the test of time well. The sound suffers from the age old gripe about CBS recordings of the period viz. it is dry and constricted, far too closely miked, and not a pleasant listen. As to the performances: well, the best that can be said for them is that they are granite like, but what little sense of adventure or enjoyment is to be had! The tempi are, without exception, laboured, and there is no sense of the exhilarating momentum which the best exponents of this music compel from this life enhancing symphony.

The Tragic Overture goes better, on the other hand, and fully captures the inexorable sense of well, er, tragedy. It is still, of course, let down by the stodgy sound. The Academic Festival Overture likewise.
