5.0 out of 5 stars so much more than Sacrifice
To my mind this album far surpassed most of Elton, s 80, s output, and yes even Too Low For Zero.
Starting with Durban Deep about the South Africa mines "I won't see you til Christmas, I breathe coal dust I get blisters".A great pounding beat with heavy guitar.Healing Hands is a gospel tinged sound "giving in to the night time aint no cure for the pain".The song was...

3.0 out of 5 stars it's no sacrifice...
This Elton John LP has a unique vibe, it's deeply rooted in it's time, but it has some gospel and motown influences from the seventies. The song "sacrifice" alone makes good reason for the purchase of the whole album.

To my mind this album far surpassed most of Elton, s 80, s output, and yes even Too Low For Zero.
Starting with Durban Deep about the South Africa mines "I won't see you til Christmas, I breathe coal dust I get blisters".A great pounding beat with heavy guitar.Healing Hands is a gospel tinged sound "giving in to the night time aint no cure for the pain".The song was a number 1 hit when it was aa sided with Sacrifice.Whispers is a beautiful ballad with Elton delivering some stunning piano and vocals. Club At The End of The Street is a Motown tribute in the style of The Drifters and is a great dancefloor song.
Sleeping With The Past is a real funky track despite its subject matter and Stones Throw From Hurtin is Elton doing falsetto. Sacrifice, well I guess everybody knows this one, his 1st UK number 1 solo single hitting the top spot after a 2nd rerelease with Healing Hands.I Never Knew Her Name about a guy amoured by a bride he cannot have.
Amazes Me is the bluesiest track on the album and straight from the Ray Charles stable of gospel blues with stunning blues guitar from Davey J.Blue Avenue ends what is a fantastic solid album aimed at Elton, s and Bernie, s youthful 60, s memories of soul, gospel and blues. The album has a slight 80, sounding production, but never the less is more than just the album that has Sacrifice on it.Give it a go, you wont be disappointed.
