5.0 out of 5 stars Loads of solo oud, 9 Mar 2011

This review is from: Barzakh (Audio CD)
Barazkh, is one of Anouar Brahem's best and although his excellent collaborators - Bechir Selmi on violin and Lassad Hosni on hand-held drum - are, as ever, superb, there is more solo oud on this album than any of his other ECM releases and that makes it a vital release.
Brahem is one of the best-selling artists on ECM, a record label that over the decades has pushed the boundaries of jazz and world-fusion - and provided great music in the process. To me, Brahem is the epitome of all the label represents. His nine or so albums with ECM, beginning with Barzakh in 1990, offer sublime music found nowhere else. The exotic images he draws with his intricate oud playing is always beautifully recorded and his musical collaborations are always fascinating. Lovely stuff.

Truly beautiful music made of solo oud pieces wonderfully played by Tunisian composer Anouar Brahem in his 1991 debut release for the ECM label. On some of the 13 tracks Brahem is nicely joined by violinist Bechir Selmi and/or percussionist Lassad Hosni. The oud is a Middle Eastern pear-shaped stringed instrument similar to the lute with a warm sound somewhat close to the nylon-stringed Spanish guitar. The results is an charming blend of Middle Eastern music and jazz improvisation, with an intimate and masterly recorded sound as usual from the ECM label. Totally recommended!

This is one of the greates pieces of (Islamic) Music I have ever heard. 'Barzakh' is the place that the soul goes to after death and before it enters Heaven.
There is a tradition in Islam that says the soul of a dead person will visit his or her own grave if you offer up a prayer at the graveside. There is something of that in this music. It's melodies and mood are almost religious and seem to reach up to Heaven. Each track seems to emerge out of some ancient well of wisdom.
I thoroughly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, 31 Oct 2007

I listened to this CD again the other night - I had forgotten how good it is.

Brahem is an absolute master of the Oud (Arabic lute). On this CD his compositions are beautiful and and musicianship is of the very highest standard.

There isn't really anything else to be said. Buy it.
