It seems too crass to squeeze into this little on screen box all that is great about this CD. Not only does it contain Aretha's "greatest" hits it also features some of the best soul music ever created.

The purity of the young Aretha's voice on this collection is unequalled, there are many pretenders but no one will ever usurp the Queen of Soul title that is so rightfully hers.

Every track here is so stand out that it feels like an historic archive after all this time, each track will have particular significance to her fans, indeed it may well sound like a romantic/emotional autobiography for many.

This is the music that I grew up with, I can set a sign for each track in my own emotional development, should I ever need a reminder!

In one of the greatest cliches (they really do have their uses for shorthand meaning) they really dont make music like this any more.

Any fan will enjoy revisiting these classics, any newcomer (of whom I feel quite envious)must be entranced by the power of the song and its singer.

I believe you can really never have too many Aretha albums, they are always excellent company and your task now, if you are reading this is to turn somebody new onto this goddess. Go on buy the album and gift it to somebody you love. Bet it works.

This album is easy to listen to and very soulful. I've played it quite a bit since getting it and it never fails to amaze me how much she puts into her songs. She truly is magnificent!

This African-American lady - who has been bestowed with the unofficial title of 'Queen of Soul' - has enjoyed a long but patchy recording career, which runs from 1956 through to the present day. But Aretha Franklin's best work undoubtedly came - from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s - with the hugely successful Atlantic Records label. This simply-titled, chronological 20 song compilation looks at that period. It includes her enduring pop hits 'Respect', 'I Say a Little Prayer', and 'Chain of Fools'. And over its 60 minutes it shows that this mezzo-soprano was as equally adept at performing sensitive down-tempo ballads, like 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man' and '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman', as she was at swaggering upbeat R&B, such as 'Rock Steady' and 'Think'. (Unfortunately, their appeal is weakened here a fair wee bit by poor mastering for CD - many tracks sound muffled.) Still, at least there are no notable omissions or clunkers that spoil this plainly-presented, budget-priced CD, that was first released back in 1987. The many subsequent attempts to collate her work - like the two-volume Very Best of Aretha Franklin from 1994 and Aretha's Best from 2001 - haven't been able to match the consistency of the song selection for 20 Greatest Hits.
