5.0 out of 5 stars absolute classic, a must have for all blues and jazz lovers, 17 July 2000

This review is from: Sin & Soul ...and Then Some (Audio CD)
I was very suprised to see no review for Sin & Soul and as a long time fan of Oscar Brown Jnr i felt obliged to let everyone know that this man is a true genius. How this album has escaped the top 100 type lists i will never understand. 'Sin & Soul' was one of the first by a black artist to speak out about the injustices that African Americans had to endure. Oscar manages to convey the message wth great power, without the usual sickly feeling one gets from social injustice lyrics. There is also real beauty with songs like 'Brown Baby' which can make a grown man cry and wonderful humour with 'But I Was Cool'. This album oozes class and style, sitting comfortably along side Sinatra's 'Songs for Swingin' Lovers', and Miles's 'Lift To The Scafold' in any collection. If i could give it six stars, believe me i would.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real classic that gives you great lyrics, vocals and music, 11 May 2001

I'm a Dylan fan ("nut" if you wish!) and tend to upset other Dylanees by saying that THE songwriter of the Sixties wasn't Bobby but was Oscar Brown Jnr! As Heylin and others have pointed out, Dylan lacked certain knowledge and skills: Oscar didn't! Social commentary and sex were happily combined with jazz & blues influences to provide a panorama of pleasure - Oscar was an outstanding user of words, often stringing together a number beginning with the same letter/sounds, such as his claim to be "Satan's sinful servant sent to get you in a fix!" (Mr. Kicks). On this album you get searing sounds from tracks such as "But I was cool" and "Watermelon Man" and reflective, astute and wry commentary from tracks like "Somebody Buy Me A Drink". You also get "Afro Blue", with its African/Latin rhythms and focus on percussion - a track that truly was outside of time. Quite simply, an album that should be in all music lovers' collection and one that represents the best of the sixties fusion of different musical styles: its not just a great "jazz" album - its simply a GREAT album! The one quibble I have with Sony is WHERE IS A CD ISSUE OF "BETWEEN HEAVEN & HELL": outtakes from it are on "Sin & Soul"! Ignore the myopic and juvenile views of "Rolling Stone" on Oscar Brown's contribution to popular music and treat yourself to a bit of the Brown magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost masterpiece of soul and wit, 4 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sin & Soul ...and Then Some (Audio CD)
Literally lost in my case, as I used to have this record when it came out in the sixties, and loved it then.
He is unique, although its probably fair to say he occupied some of the same territory as Gill Scott-Heron, who may be rather better known.
Brown ranges from the salaciously witty - Hazel's Hips - through tender gentle lullaby - Brown baby - to tragic lost love - Rags and Old Iron - without a beat's hesitation in each consummate performance; clearly he could just as well have been an actor, and also a serious politician. Sadly neglected, this brilliant set should provide the opportunity for the record to be set straight.
